Olympic Wilderness Apiary - HoneyBees and Breeder Queens

Olympic Wilderness Apiary - HoneyBees and Breeder Queens Queen Honeybees for sale We are committed to the chemical-free preservation and enhancement of these remarkable queens, offering them for sale July – September.

While beekeeping in the late 90’s when wild honeybee populations were thought to have all but disappeared, our discovery of healthy wild survivor bees thriving unmanaged for decades in the most isolated parts of the Olympic Peninsula was the beginning of an amazing journey. Visit our website …

Hey Beeks
we are coming into that time of year when your spring package queens are now laying-in brood that is destined to be their winter support colony.
It’s a good time while you are getting your honey supers off, and assessing your mite treatment options, to consider the value of re-queening your colonies with freshly mated Pacific Northwest Wild Survivor queens specially bred for disease and mite resistance.

In summer of 2022 we had surprise visit From Chef Melissa King & the National Geographic crew filming their "Tasting Wild" series near our apiary ... OWA has a cameo appearance in the beginning of their "Coastline" segment which gives a beautiful overall visual of the isolated wilderness that is a large part of the success of our Wild-Survivor Queen-Breeding Program.

Nature’s incredible details take on new meaning for chef Melissa King as she joins National Geographic Photographer and Explorer Anand Varma to explore coast...

We have breeding our Disease and Mite resistant feral-hybrid Survivor Honeybees for over 27 years, without antibiotics or synthetic miticides. This video shows how well our Guard Bees detect and defend their hive entrances from unwanted "intruders"

I appreciated what this photographer had to say about the hard work and interaction between the bees and the beekeeper. Thoughtful, insightful and so true

February 12th 2018: weather warming enough to bring overwintered Nucs out of their indoor pod. Loose straw piled at their entrances added insulation and forced reorientation flights helping reduce any returns to their previous "pod" locations. Good idea but perhaps a bit premature. ...Temperatures dipped into the 20's a few days later requiring some creative insulation intervention!

Craziest summer in 20 years of breeding queens. In addition to the usual weather challenges we face here in our tiny microclimate, smoke in the air from British Columbia wildfires disrupted Queen mating for weeks on end, sending us scurrying to more distant isolated drone areas for successfully mated queens. Whew. Looking forward to seasons' end.

Its been a great week in the apiary. Grafting new queen cells; restocking nucs; boxing and shipping queens; and one of the best parts: spending time with beekeepers who arrived to pick up their newly purchased nucs. One of the real joys of our business is meeting other beekeepers who are genuinely excited and passionate about the bees...it seems a lot more like we have just met new friends rather than customers by the time they leave the apiary.

Our apiary is in a fungus rich environment where nosema ceranae has been rampant, yet our naturally-adapted wild survivor bees manage to thrive in spite of carrying unbelievably high spore loads of this pathogen. A new report on the importance of nutrition throws a spotlight on one more distinguishing characteristic of our feral stock: THEY ARE HEAVY POLLEN HOARDERS.
Hmmm…once again science catches up with nature
