Last week was very hard, as we had to sadly say goodbye to one of our most well loved and famous pigs โ€“ Wee Wee. In January 2016 during a huge snow storm, Wee Wee was found and rescued by the Smith Family, who had been on a ski trip and saw the tiny little piglet struggling in a snow drift on the side of the road. This wonderful family turned around and pulled him out of the freezing snow, saving his life. He was shivering, so they snuggled him up in a sweat shirt, and snuck him into the hotel they were staying at. Due to the roads being impassable, it was several days before they could get Wee Wee to Poplar Spring. Wee Weeโ€™s story went viral, and he was featured on the Today show and was in People magazine and other news outlets. Wee Wee was incredibly bright and full of life, from the moment we met him. His first few months at Poplar were spent in the special needs area, where he met another rescued piglet, Scooter. Wee Wee and Scooter became best friends, and went on many adventures, documented on their own page. They loved to run and play and explore their world, and it was so fun to see their reactions to anything new. He and Scooter roamed the two acre yard, making a fort in the bushes, splashing in the mud puddles and creeks, and excitedly greeting wildlife like deer and geese that would come into the yard. Wee Wee, being a Yorkshire pig ( the most common type of pig raised for meat) grew very quickly. He lived a very long and happy life, though, and grew to be over 700 lbs! He had only recently started having severe mobility issues in the last few weeks, and then was suddenly unable to walk or stand. We made the difficult decision to have the vet come to help him go peacefully. Wee Wee was a very special and very loved pig, who touched the hearts of many. He showed so many people that pigs have personalities, just like a dog, just like a person. Many people wrote to us and said that they stopped eating pigs or became vegetarian or vegan because of him. Rest in peace, Wee Wee. We hope you are now running freely in a field somewhere, like you loved to do when you were young. We will miss you always, and will never forget you.๐Ÿ˜ขโค๏ธ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ–

Our rescued cows know how to relax and stay cool, even when the temps are almost 100! They have 400 acres to roam and always find the best spots! I always love driving through the woods and seeing them there, it feels like we are on a cow safari! ๐Ÿ˜‚โค๏ธ๐Ÿ„

We were so saddened to hear of the recent passing of our long time volunteer and friend, Jim Fremont. Jim volunteered at Poplar Spring for over 20 years, helping out in our Special needs area, and caring for the chickens and turkeys. He was also always present at every event, as he enjoyed talking to visitors about the animals and their stories. Jim promoted Poplar wherever he went, and introduced many friends and groups to the sanctuary over the years. He was a true lover of all animals, and volunteered at many other local wildlife facilities and animal rescues, often helping to transport animals as needed. Jim will be greatly missed, he was a true friend and great supporter for the animals, and we will never forget him. A celebration of his life will be held at Collins Funeral home on Monday June 2 and we are honored that Jim requested that his ashes be spread at the sanctuary, which we will do on June 23. Rest in Peace Jim, and thank you for always being there for the animals.โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ข

Welcome to our newest residents- Mama goat Bailey, and her six day old baby Lionel!โค๏ธBailey is a one year old Nigerian Dwarf goat, who was abandoned by her previous owner. A kind neighbor, who was planning to find a home for her, had no idea that Bailey was pregnant until she was suddenly lying on her side and crying in pain. She rushed her to the hospital and found that the baby was stuck in a breech position (backwards), and a cesarean section was the only safe thing to do for mom and baby. Unable to pay the bill, she surrendered Bailey to the hospital. The wonderful vets at New Bolton vet hospital called us, and we agreed to pay for the surgery and take in Bailey and her baby. A few hours later little Lionel was successfully born by c-section, and Mom and baby bonded and recovered well. On Friday we transported them to Poplar Spring, where they are resting in a private stall while Bailey recovers from her surgery and little Lionel is enjoying bouncing all around like a healthy baby goat should! Bailey is very shy but she is coming around and allowing us to gently pet her. Lionel has no fear and is absolutely adorable!๐Ÿฅฐ In a few weeks we will be slowly introducing them to the rescued goat herd, and they will have a wonderful life here with lots of goat friends.โค๏ธ๐ŸThanks to Elie Goldman for this cute video! ๐Ÿ’•

Piper, one of our elderly sheep, has a growth near her eye, that the vets suspect is squamous cell carcinoma. She has an appointment to have surgery to remove it in May, but until then needed something to keep the flies away, since it frequently bleeds when she scratches it. One of our awesome supporters suggested a fly mask, like our horses wear. This one, designed for a mini horse, worked pretty well with some adjustments. She can see through it perfectly and it protected her eye beautifully. The only problem is that the other sheep were half curious/half terrified of this strange pink headed sheep, and initially ran away from her when she tried to join the herd.๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’•

These two sweet little baby Nigerian Dwarf goats arrived this weekend, stranded after their former person was evicted from their farm in PA. They ended up with some of the manโ€™s friends at a residence in Arlington, VA, who had no idea how to care for baby goats. For several days they resorted to feeding them the only things they had available - ivy that was growing outside their house, and some carrots, while they desperately searched for a home. They were so relieved when they called Poplar Spring, and we agreed to take them in, realizing the dire situation these little ones were in. They are only a few months old, and were so emaciated and hungry when they arrived - they immediately began devouring the fresh hay and forage we offered them. We arenโ€™t sure what their previous situation was like but they were terrified of being touched, and needed a good bath. Once they were clean and fed they slept very soundly in some warm straw beds under the heat lamps in a separated stall in the barn. We have been working hard to get them to trust us, and they are slowly coming around, allowing us to pet and hand feed them. As they gain weight and regain their health, we know they will soon be happily bouncing around and playing like baby goats should. We are so glad we could give them a wonderful home where they will have lots of rescued goat friends and receive the best care for the rest of their lives. We love them so much already!โค๏ธ๐Ÿ
