Dog genetics can be fascinating. Exhibit A... Churro!

Take a close look at this face. If you guessed Churro was part German Shepherd or Husky, you might only be getting a fraction of the story! Dog genetics are wild, and they don't always work the way we think.

Here are two mind-blowing facts about dog DNA that explain why our furry friends look and act the way they do:

1️⃣ One litter can have multiple fathers! Yes, really. It’s a natural phenomenon called superfecundation. Because female dogs release multiple eggs over their fertile period, if she mates with more than one male, different fathers can sire different puppies in the exact same litter. This is why littermates can look like entirely different breeds!

2️⃣ The "Low Percentage, High Personality" effect. A dog can inherit a tiny percentage of a specific breed (say, just 10% Chihuahua or German Shepherd) but look exactly like one or have its exact temperament. Why? Because a very small handful of genes control physical traits like ear shape, coat type, and size—and if those specific genes are dominant, they overpower everything else!

A breakfast date this past weekend with my best little girl at one of our favorites, Café M 💛

They have the tastiest matcha, macarons and gluten-free breakfast sandwiches around, and Sheba loves people-watching (and pigeon-watching too!) as we relax on their patio 😎🐶

In honor of National Dog Day this week, tell me... what do you and your dog love to do together? Show me your pics below of your best furry friend!

Unless you have one yourself, it's not every day that you see a Kerry Blue or Airedale Terrier - and yesterday I got to work with both ❤️ So I figured we'd have a little info sesh about these two bearded breeds...

Though they look like cousins, these two have unique personalities and traits:

👑 The Airedale Terrier: "The King of Terriers"
Size: The largest terrier.
Coat: Classic black and tan.
Vibe: Playful, goofy, and confident.
Superpower: Fierce family protector.
Quirk: Loves to dig and play in water!

💙 The Kerry Blue Terrier: "The Irish Gem"
Size: Medium and compact.
Coat: Stunning blue-gray waves.
Vibe: High-energy, alert, and intensely loyal.
Superpower: Stealing hearts.
Quirk: Hypoallergenic and rarely sheds!

🤝 What They Have in Common:
Both are super smart (and more than a little stubborn!).
Style: Signature bearded chin and always looking dapper.
Heart: Deeply devoted to their humans.

Tell me, have you been lucky enough to know either of these breeds??

I had the sweetest training moment today with Jossie the Golden Retriever — and her human brother, who insisted on practicing right alongside her on his own mat! It was adorable and honestly one of the best examples of how family‑friendly training can be.

We worked on “Go Place,” which simply means: go lay down on your spot until I release you. Once a dog understands this, it becomes incredibly practical in everyday life:

• A calm place to relax while the toddler plays (so dog can still be part of the action without being underfoot)

• A designated spot outside the kitchen during meals to prevent accidental begging (or food snatching from the toddler or guests!)

• A polite waiting place when answering the door, instead of jumping on friends and family

Jossie did beautifully — and her little brother was very proud to be her training partner. Moments like these make my whole day. 💛🐾

A dog's senses are a lot stronger than ours in many ways. But did you know that their vision is actually not as good as ours in some ways? Dogs have a harder time gauging things like depth perception, and while they are not completely colorblind, they do not see the range of color that we humans see 👀

Here's a good example of a dog's vision compared to ours...

Stuffed or real??? 🐶🥰....

REAL! This adorable floof is Marlow, a 14-week-old Goldendoodle and my newest client. Couldn't you just squeeze him?! He is going to learn all of his obedience commands, house manners, social manners and life skills so he can become the bestest boy for his new family 💗

Even though I specialize in deep seated and complex issues like anxiety and reactivity, I absolutely LOVE working with puppies and their people, so we can get everyone off to a happy and harmonious life together from the start. Plus, puppy kisses make even the worst days 100 times better 💕🐾

The hardest thing about sharing our lives with dogs... they never live forever, and break our hearts every time they leave us. But their unconditional love, friendship that knows no bounds, and soulful spirits make the pain worth it 100 times over 💖

Today my heart goes out to my client Vinnie, his dad Josh Mullis, and his whole family that is missing him. Vinnie sadly and suddenly lost his battle with Hemangiosarcoma last week, as so many dogs do. My own corgi, Scout, lost his life to this very disease in 2022 and I still miss him each and every day.

I will always remember Vinnie as the sweetest boy, always smiling when I saw him, nudging me to give him more pets (and treats!) and bringing his enthusiasm to everything he did. I know his family is devastated. There is never enough time with the dogs we love.

Please keep Josh and his family in your prayers as they grieve this momentous loss 🙏 Vinnie, you are so loved, buddy. And I know you will be thought of fondly every day until the day we all meet you again. Rest easy, sweet boy 💓🌈

When you're a BIG little girl, you have to fold up to squeeze between the couch and the coffee table 😂😍

Cutie patootie Maisy had a good lesson today working on some important foundational skills for an extra large breed like a Great Dane - like how to settle on the floor while her mom and dad are in the kitchen eating or cooking, instead of jumping up to see what they have.

Because let's face it - in another few months, she'll be taller than the counter and will no longer have to jump 😉

Today I had the pleasure of working with Kamau, a big, strong Cane Corso with an even bigger heart. Living in an apartment complex means he’s constantly navigating tight hallways, blind corners, surprise dogs, and people popping out of nowhere — not exactly an easy environment for a dog who gets aroused when he sees other pups.

For a boy his size, learning impulse control isn’t just helpful… it’s essential for everyone’s safety. So today we focused on managing all those unpredictable elements around him and helping Kamau practice watching calmly, loose‑leash walking, and looking to his person for direction instead of reacting on impulse.

And honestly? That little bit of “brain work” was all this Cane Corso needed. He’s now spending the rest of his day doing what Cane Corsos do best — resting like a king. 😄🐾
