🚨 Pet Poison Alert! 🚨

⚠️ A new chewable, grape-flavored version of Zyrtec (cetirizine) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is now on the market — and it may be dangerous to dogs!

These chewables contain tartaric acid — the same compound found in grapes and raisins that has been linked to kidney failure in dogs.

Some formulations may also contain xylitol, a sweetener that is highly toxic to pets. (See our post from last week for more on xylitol dangers.)

🛑 Please read ingredient labels carefully before giving ANY over-the-counter meds to your pets — even ones that seem safe or familiar.

🐾Today is World Rabies Day!🌍

Did you know? Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear—but it’s also 100% preventable with proper vaccination.

Rabies is most often spread by wildlife like bats, foxes, and skunks.
In Idaho, bats are the main source. Even indoor pets can be at risk if a bat gets inside your home. A quick bite or scratch could be all it takes.

🦇Fun fact: Did you know that a bat can fit into an opening as little as a 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch (0.9 to 1.3 centimeters).

⚠️ Recent local cases:
Between 2008–2023, Idaho has averaged about 16 rabid bats per year, but only among bats submitted for testing. The actual prevalence among bats is lower.

In early 2024, a bat in Kootenai County tested positive for rabies after exposing a family and dog.
In 2023, a suspected skunk case in Bonners Ferry caused concern (thankfully a false positive), but it was a reminder that rabies risk is real in North Idaho.

✅ Why vaccinate your pets?

Protects dogs, cats, and ferrets from a deadly disease
Shields YOU and your family from exposure
It’s required by law in many areas
Helps avoid euthanasia or quarantine if your pet is exposed

Even if your cat never leaves the house or your dog is always leashed—vaccination is still essential. Bats get in. Accidents happen.

🚨 Watch for signs:

Sudden aggression or unusual shyness
Excessive drooling, trouble swallowing
Staggering, paralysis, or odd behavior
Wild animals acting unusually tame or active during the day

📞 If your pet may have had contact with a wild animal, or if a bat is found inside your home, call your vet immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms.

🛡️ Prevention = Protection
✔️ Keep rabies vaccines up to date
✔️ Don’t handle wildlife
✔️ Bat-proof your home
✔️ Report any strange animal behavior

Your pet depends on you for protection. A simple vaccine can save a life—maybe even yours.

Stay safe, Bonner County! 💉🐶🐱

Heads up, dog lovers!
Did you know that xylitol — a sugar substitute found in many “sugar‑free” gums, candies, baked goods, toothpastes, even some medications — is extremely toxic to dogs?

Here’s what to watch out for:
Dogs can get severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) quickly after ingesting xylitol. Signs include vomiting, weakness, lethargy, tremors, seizures, possibly coma.

Liver damage can follow, often developing a day or two later.

⚠️ If your dog eats something with xylitol:
▪Check what was swallowed immediately
▪Call your vet or a poison control line right away
▪Monitor for low blood sugar signs
▪Even if the dog seems fine initially, liver issues may develop later — take it seriously.

🚨🚧ALTERNATIVE NAMES FOR XYLITOL🚧🚨
▪Birch Sugar
▪Birch Bark Extract
▪Wood Sugar
▪Sugar Alcohol

Stay safe out there — better to be cautious! 🐶❤️

Given we are close to the border, Idaho pet owners should also be aware of this scamming activity.
