⚠️ The recent cold snap in South Florida has caused a massive iguana die off. Botulism toxin accumulates in the dead iguanas as they decompose. Dogs are attracted to the dead iguanas and are exposed when they lick or consume. Botulism toxin causes paralysis which can be deadly. Recovery can take weeks and requires intensive nursing care until the toxins affecting the nerves wear off.
Wear heavy latex gloves or use a shovel and pick up any dead iguanas in the yard and dispose of them in heavy trash bags.
Be diligent when walking dogs to keep them away from dead iguanas.
If you think your pet has been exposed seek medical care immediately, BEFORE symptoms occur ⚠️
