🐈 Happy National Cat Day!

Today, we celebrate the whiskers, the purrs, the playful personalities, and the unconditional love that make cats such extraordinary companions.

At Smitten Kitten Rescue, we have the privilege of seeing just how resilient these incredible animals truly are. From frightened kittens learning to trust, to abandoned cats discovering the comfort of a warm bed, and a loving touch. Every rescue reminds us why we do what we do.

But today is about more than celebrating the cats already curled up in loving homes. It’s also about remembering those still waiting. The ones surviving on the streets, the ones in shelters, and the ones who have never known what it feels like to belong to someone.

Every cat deserves safety, compassion, and a chance at a better life.

So today, give your kitty a little extra love, consider opening your home to a foster or rescue, and remember that even the smallest act of kindness can change a cat’s entire world.

🐈‍⬛ Happy National Black Cat Day!

Throughout history, black cats have symbolized protection, prosperity, good fortune, and even a little bit of magic. In many cultures, they are considered a blessing to have in your home.

Sadly, these beautiful souls have also been surrounded by centuries of superstition, often being unfairly associated with bad luck. Even today, black cats can be overlooked in shelters and rescues simply because of the color of their fur.

At Smitten Kitten Rescue, we believe every cat deserves to be seen for who they are, not what they look like. Black cats are every bit as loving, playful, affectionate, and deserving of a forever home as any other cat.

For those fortunate enough to have rescued a black cat, you already know just how special they are. They bring warmth, companionship, laughter, and a little extra magic into our lives.

The truth is, the lucky one isn’t the black cat who gets adopted. It’s the person who gets the privilege of loving them.

So today, let’s celebrate our beautiful little house panthers, challenge the superstitions, and remind the world that love doesn’t come in a particular color.

💗 This is what it looks like when a very loving, sweetheart of a 6 month old kitten gives you a hug.

This is Edward. He was rescued by both Bannock Feral Friends, and Bannock Humane society. This week they joined forces, and Trapped 44 cats. They then took them to the Feral Cat Clinic held by All About the Animals Coalition, where they were spayed/neutered before returning them to their home.

When BFF finds friendly cats/kittens while trapping, their first call is to any and every rescue until they find a safe spot for them. Those babies deserve to be in loving homes, not out on the street. They simply won’t survive.

That is exactly how we acquired Edward. He now has a warm home, lots of yummy food, and all the love he could possibly imagine.

Whomever adopts this adorable boy when he’s medically sound and ready to go will be the luckiest person alive. He is SO THANKFUL to be off the streets.

I’ve received hugs from kitties before…. but never like this. He just pulled me in and wouldn’t let go 🥹

Big Thanks to our Pocatello Rescues and Animal Advocates for working together, and working SO HARD to keep babies like Edward safe and healthy.

Our recent TNVR efforts have brought an abundance of kittens into our care. While our goal is to return community cats to their outdoor homes after receiving medical care, the kittens we encounter who can be socialized deserve a different future. A future filled with love, safety, and a forever family.

But we have a problem.

We simply do not have enough foster homes.

Every day, there are more kittens who need our help. Kittens who deserve a chance. Kittens who could grow up to become someone’s beloved family member.

And right now, our ability to save them depends on people like YOU.

Fostering doesn’t mean making a lifelong commitment. It means opening your home and your heart temporarily while we work to get these babies healthy, socialized, and ready for adoption.

You don’t have to be a superhero to save a life. Sometimes, all it takes is a little extra space, some patience, and a whole lot of love.

Rescue to Resilience.

👀 If you haven’t noticed, Smitten Kitten Rescue has been doing a lot of TNVR lately.

There is a direct correlation in the number of kittens we care for, and the number of unfixed cats (whether friendly or feral) that exist in the communities we serve.

Feral and community cat numbers in Pocatello and our surrounding communities are overwhelming, and the need for TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) has never been more apparent. Without intervention, these colonies will continue to grow.

We’ve been partnering with both Bannock Feral Friends, and Bannock Humane Society to help combat this growing problem…and All About the Animals Coalition has dedicated an entire feral clinic once per month to aid with spay and neuter! By working together and sharing resources, we’re able to reach more colonies and help more cats.

When we trap kittens young enough to be socialized, we’re keeping them in our rescue, teaching them that humans aren’t so scary, completing all of their medical care, and finding them loving forever homes.

But here’s the REALLY exciting part…

This is PHASE ONE of the MeowHaus Project!

Our community desperately needs more resources to address the growing feral and community cat population, and we’re working hard to make those resources a reality.

Our next big project is our 12’ x 15’ barn shed.

The great news is that it’s already sitting on a foundation, which is AWESOME! The not so great news is that it has suffered extensive water damage over time. We’ll need to take much of it down to the framing and rebuild it properly.

That means we’ll be looking for donations of OSB sheeting, 1/2 inch drywall, weather stripping, 2 new windows, insulation, nails, screws, and other building materials, as well as financial donations to help cover what we can’t get donated.

Once finished, this 180 square foot building will become our MeowHaus storage space for traps, kennels, food, and supplies so we can continue expanding our efforts, and bringing Phase One of MeowHaus to life.

This is about so much more than trapping cats.

It’s about preventing litter after litter of kittens from being born outside. It’s about reducing disease, suffering, and overpopulation. It’s about giving socializable kittens a chance to grow up in homes instead of colonies.

Our community needs this, our businesses need this, the cats need us, and we need our community behind us to make it happen.

One trap, one colony, one kitten, and one step at a time, we’re building MeowHaus.
