HOOF ABSCESSES EXPLAINED

Sooner or later, nearly all horse owners will deal with a hoof abscess. But what does "hoof abscess" actually mean?

Although most commonly seen during the wet winter and spring months, hoof abscesses can plague horses year-round and usually occur when debris and bacteria enter the foot through hoof cracks and wounds, even horseshoeing holes. The bacteria then get trapped between the sensitive laminae (the tissue layer that bonds the hoof capsule to the coffin bone) and the hoof wall or sole and create pus; the pus builds up over the course of time and puts pressure behind the hoof wall or sole, until it causes the sudden onset of acute lameness when the pain finally becomes too great.
(The diagram below shows a simplified view of the equine hoof to help you visualize the structures involved in this process.)

Hoof abscesses can mimic other more serious diseases or injuries, so involving your veterinarian early on in the diagnosis and prompt treatment of this condition is always a good idea. Some abscesses will be uncomplicated and rupture on their own like a large pimple at the coronary band or heel bulbs; other abscesses, however, could require radiographs and will need to be surgically drained.

Navicular Inflammation

Navicular inflammation, often referred to as “Navicular Disease” or “Podotrochleosis”, is one of the most common causes of intermittent, often-shifting, thoracic limb lameness in horses between 4 and 15 years of age. Although the pelvic limbs may be affected, for all intents and purposes it is a disease of the thoracic limbs.

How Does Navicular Inflammation Arise?

Simply, inflammation in the palmar foot or navicular area develops as a result of excessive tension of the deep digital flexor (DDF) tendon.

Since the DDF tendon uses the navicular bone as a fulcrum, increased DDF tension results in increased pressure across the navicular bone. In the normal situation, the navicular bone responds by compressing. However, if the pressure is persistent and/or severe, the navicular bone will begin to remodel in an attempt to adapt to the biomechanical stimulus.

During remodeling, osteoblasts (hard bone cells) are laid down along the palmar surface of the marrow cavity. This results in a higher hard bone:soft bone ratio which increases the bone’s stiffness and decreases its compressibility.

If the pressure is of low intensity and/or of limited duration, navicular bone remodeling may successfully absorb, diffuse, and redistribute the load. In this situation, horses will remain asymptomatic. However, if the pressure is of high intensity and/or persistent, inflammation (and pain) may ensue.

The following is a list of ocular emergencies that should prompt a call to your veterinarian because long term prognosis may depend on immediate, accurate diagnosis and treatment.
• Blunt head / ocular trama
• Corneal ulcers (these are painful and will typically cause excess squinting, tearing,
and swelling of the eyelids)
• Eyelid lacerations / corneal laceration
• Acute swelling of the eyelids or periocular tissue
• Acute blindness or visual disturbance
• Excessive drainage from the medial canthus (inner corner) of the eye
• Hyphema (blood) in the eye
• Glaucoma (looks like the entire eye is enlarged, with a bluish hue)
• Stromal abscess (often looks like a yellow to tan spot in the cornea)
• Uveitis (intraocular inflammation)
• Facial nerve paralysis resulting in the inability to close the eyelids (this causes expo-
sure keratitis / ulceration of the cornea)

When an emergency or natural disaster occurs, it is always in the best interest of the horses for both the equine practitioner and the horse owner to be prepared. Foreign animal disease outbreaks or other catastrophic events can adversely affect the health and well-being of horses.

As temperatures rise this summer, it's good to remember to pay close attention to the signs of heat stroke / dehydration in your horse:

- Excessive sweating
- Heavy breathing
- Elevated heart and respiratory rate
- Change in behavior

If your horse is experiencing any of these signs, please call us!

While riding in the heat can be perfectly fine, be attentive to your horse's needs. If you feel hot, they feel hotter - it might be time for a drink of water, a bath, and a break in the shade.
