Daily Blanket Checks = Happy Horses ✅

🐴Once blankets go on, daily checks are a must!
✔️ Make sure straps are secure and not twisted
✔️ Check for shoulder rubs or pressure points
✔️ Remove and groom underneath regularly
✔️ Watch the weather — warm days might mean a lighter blanket or no blanket at all

A quick daily check can prevent rubs, skin infections, and overheating.

🐴It’s easy to think “warmer is better,” but over-blanketing can actually make your horse too hot, leading to sweating, dehydration, and chills once the blanket is removed.

If you’re comfortable in a light jacket, your horse probably doesn’t need a heavy blanket yet!

Check under blankets daily — if your horse is sweaty or damp, it’s time to switch to something lighter.

Performance horses are especially prone to gastric ulcers due to:
🏇 Frequent travel
🏇 Stall confinement
🏇 Intense training
🏇 High-grain diets

🐴Ulcers can directly affect performance, focus, and recovery.

Our veterinarians can scope your horse on the farm or at our hospital to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment right away.

⚠️ Intestinal disorders in horses can show up in subtle ways — but they can quickly become serious if left untreated.

Common warning signs include:
❗ Diarrhea or loose manure
❗ Weight loss despite normal appetite
❗ Dull coat or poor condition
❗ Abdominal pain or mild colic episodes
❗ Protein loss and fluid swelling (edema)

These symptoms can be linked to issues such as parasites, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, or malabsorption problems.

💡 Early diagnosis and treatment are key to recovery — if your horse is showing any of these signs, contact our veterinary team right away.

Equine gastric ulcers are sores that form in the lining of a horse’s stomach, often caused by excess stomach acid.
Even mild stress or skipped meals can trigger them.

Symptoms can be subtle — that’s why a gastroscope exam is the gold standard for diagnosis.
✅ Available in-clinic and on-farm at South Shore Equine Clinic.

🌸 Meet Merida, one of South Shore Equine Clinic's brave patients!

Merida recently underwent surgery and is now enjoying her rehabilitation at the beautiful Ross Haven Farm. She’s making excellent progress — soaking up the fall sunshine, grazing on fresh grass, and taking steady steps toward a full recovery. 🍂🐴

We’re so proud of this sweet mare and grateful for the wonderful care she’s receiving during her rehab. Here’s to healing, strength, and many more happy trail rides ahead! 💚

Learning never stops at South Shore Equine Clinic! 🐴📚

Our doctors and staff recently participated in an in-house continuing education session with Nextmune, focusing on equine allergy testing and treatment options. These sessions help our team stay up to date on the latest diagnostics and therapies, ensuring that our patients receive the most advanced and effective care available.

A big thank-you to Nextmune and Jen Seuss CVT, CVBL for visiting and sharing your expertise — our team loved the hands-on learning and discussion!

Strategic Deworming 101 🐴💊

Did you know the old method of rotational deworming (giving different products every 6–8 weeks) is now outdated?

🧬 Parasites have become resistant to many dewormers — meaning those frequent treatments might not be working as well as you think.

Today, veterinarians recommend strategic deworming instead:
✔️ Test your horse’s manure (FEC = f***l egg count)
✔️ Target only the horses that actually need treatment
✔️ Deworm at the right time of year based on results and risk

💡 Strategic deworming protects your horse and helps slow resistance.

📞 Call or text 781-585-2611 us to schedule an appointment or to ask our team about setting up a customized deworming plan this fall!
