As Give to the Max Day begins to wind down, we feel it's only fitting to cap the day with one more Simba update! Now approaching about 13 years of age, our sweet boy Simba is still beautifully decked out in his shining coat, remains in diabetic remission, and spends his days drooling while being brushed as he watches the hummingbirds on the deck. While he remains with the TAAPS family - it's for good reason. Simba's neurological issues are continuing to progress. While he still pulls off his daily zoomies, his tendency to fall over and length of time he has the energy to play requires we continue to test and research his condition to see if there is any more we can do. We are once again tackling his progressing hind end weakness and scheduling a CT scan to try and better understand where these unexplainable "wobbles" originate. As we're sure you can imagine, keeping him healthy requires a lot of love and a big checkbook, but he's 100% worth it!

The "Bewitched Litter" - Gladys, Samantha, Endora, and Dr. Bombay - started as little feral orphans at a local animal control. Sadly, their mother and two siblings had been killed, and these four sweethearts needed all the help they could get which brought them to us! When they first came to us, they were oh so ferocious (well, as ferocious as a 7-8 week old kitten can be) and didn't trust people at all. Gladys (as in Kravitz, the busy body neighbor on Bewitched) was the first to come around, seeming to realize that she caught more flies with honey than vinegar. She also found one of her great loves, FOOD, to be a big motivator! Not far behind her were her siblings, Samantha, Endora, and Dr. Bombay. In time, they grew into their personalities and their confidence bloomed! With plenty of time, love, and care, their foster mom worked to socialize them so they would be ready for a family of their very own. Gladys and Samantha have been adopted (together!), but Endora and her brother, Dr. Bombay are still waiting to bewitch the purr-fect family for them!

Magnus is one amazing cat, and he is a great example of just what your support looks like in action! If you have been so lucky as to meet Magnus, you know he is a complete and total love bug. He adores his people and loves to spend time with them. Magnus loves to curl up in his foster mom's lap and soak up all the attention! He doesn't require an action packed day, instead enjoying a quiet home and quality time just hanging out with his favorite people. His sweet nature always shines, even at his vet visits where he is always a favorite!

If you're new to us, Magnus has been with one of our team members for the last few years due to a mystery litter box issue. To put it politely, his issue primarily revolves around not wanting to or feeling uncomfortable going " #2" in the litter box; however, this also led to some potty issues. Fortunately, we are thrilled to share that after all the testing and many veterinary visits, we have finally found a solution to his constipation issues leading to success in resolving his potty issues - psyllium husk! Resolving his constipation has made a world of difference with his potty habits and he hasn't had a potty accident in over a year! We are so happy for our sweet Magnus!

This stunning trio joined us earlier this year after beginning life outdoors! Fortunately, Lightfoot, Wisp, and Tipper were brought inside by a kind woman who contacted us asking for help. In their foster home, they quickly found that indoor life has a lot of perks! They enjoyed climbing the cat tree and finding a perch to enjoy watching the world outside, curling up on a cozy cat bed for an afternoon cat nap, and soaking up all the sunshine that poured in through the sunroom windows in their foster home. Their foster mom showed them love and kindness, and taught them to trust people, helping their personalities bloom and making them ready for their forever families. When the kittens were old enough, they received their age appropriate vaccines, were spayed/neutered, microchipped, and FelV/FIV tested. As we're sure you can imagine, between medical care and daily care items like food and litter, the cost of care for a litter of kittens adds up quickly!

Last year we shared the story of Hurricane, Thunderbolt, Storm, and Skye - siblings who had come into rescue after being born in a chicken coop. Their mother was a feral cat who had not yet been spayed through TNR, and the woman who found them was unable to keep them long term. Fortunately, the kittens were able to stay with their mother until they were old enough to be separated from her, at which point she was spayed through TNR and they moved to a foster home with us.

This year we get to share that Hurricane, Thunderbolt, Storm, and Skye found their forever home...TOGETHER! We have always been proponents of adopting kittens in pairs, but seeing this entire sibling set go home together was extra special. We are so grateful to their new mom for giving them such a loving home!

Adopted at the end of December 2024, these sweethearts began their new chapter just in time to kick off the new year. We are continually humbled that we have the opportunity to help cats like this sweet sibling set on their journey to find their happily-ever-after. We have talked about our sweet Simba many times before, but he's too purr-fect not to talk about today! Simba has been in our care as a long-term foster since 2021, coming into rescue following the unexpected passing of his person. Newly diagnosed with diabetes, his hair was dry and matted, he had worn himself bald in some places, his nails had bacterial infection, and his teeth were in dire need of a dental cleaning. Fortunately, his first foster family was up to the challenge of helping him get healthy again! They helped him shed the extra weight he was carrying, and got his diabetes into remission. His coat and nails improved, and he received the dental care he so badly needed - you can see just how gorgeous he is today!

Preferring to be an only cat, once he was healthy and stable, SImba moved to live with one of our co-founders who is able to keep him separate from her other resident cats. He loves to be by her side, and fancies himself her home office assistant! He loves when she chats with him, and gives him all the pets and scratches he could ever want. As the years have passed and Simba's health needs have shifted, we continue to cover the cost of his medical care, ensuring he receives everything he needs. We remain committed to his medical care whatever life brings, and we are so grateful to his foster mom who provides him with all the love and attention he deserves!

It's officially Give to the Max Day 2025! Created in 2009 to launch GiveMN, an independent nonprofit organization working to ignite generosity and grow giving, Give to the Max Day has become Minnesota's annual giving holiday. That initial spark touched off an outpouring of generosity, raising $300 million for Minnesota causes and nonprofit organizations in its first 16 years! As we participate in the 17th annual Give to the Max Day, we are so grateful for our wonderful community. To our volunteers, adopters, donors, and supporters - thank you for your unwavering support and generosity! Whether you have shared the gift of your time, provided a donation, adopted a cat (or cats!), or shared any of our posts, we could not help the animals that we do without you!
