WHO NEEDS EGGS?! We’re drowning in fresh eggs. If you want to set some farm fresh eggs aside for winter, NOW is the time! Let me know how many you want, (sold by 18 count), and I will make sure they are clean with the bloom intact, unrefrigerated, and ready to water glass at your house!

Get ahold of me stat, we don’t leave them on the counter longer than a day or two, and then it’s right into the fridge.

You don’t want to be scrambling looking for fresh eggs when everyone’s chickens are taking their winter break, do you??? I’m setting ours aside right now. They’ll stay fresh for up to two years if they’re stored properly!!!

Reach out ASAP, and get your winter fix squirreled away!

Today we got home from running errands, and found my favorite rooster face down in the tall grass, with some missing feathers. He was very lethargic and let me walk right up to him and pick him up. He is not a mean rooster at all, but he’s not cuddly. He’ll follow you around and ask for treats, but he doesn’t want to be picked up. Anyways, after doing a quick headcount, it doesn’t seem that we’re missing any hens, so we’re fairly confident that he battled a hawk and somehow survived. I checked him over and couldn’t see any obvious signs of injuries, so I’m hoping he’s just exhausted. We brought him in and got him settled in a kennel with some good food, water, and a blanket to keep him quiet. If everyone could send some good thoughts to my sweet Gas Station Lewis, we would appreciate it.

What a weekend it’s been over here…

In no particular order, here are some points of note from the last few days:

•Archer, who is terrified of dogs, discovered that he LOVES playing soccer with boarding dog, Niko. I wish I had a photo of them playing together, but the moment was just so magical that I couldn’t look away and didn’t want to spoil it by pulling out my phone. This is a HUGE developmental milestone for Archer. Of all the dogs I thought he might tolerate, sort of, Niko was not on the list. But Niko has a very patient way of harassing you into playing soccer with him, and that patience gave Archer enough confidence to come out with his dad and I supervising and play with him. It was a wonderful moment and I am so proud of him.

•Dan fell involuntary hostage to my project list again, and built the turkey nuggets their new, moveable tractor. This will allow them to be on pasture indefinitely until they are big enough for butchering. This is the best quality of life you can offer a meat bird, and they’ll spend their days scratching in the dirt, eating bugs, sunbathing, and running around wildly while they grow. It’s a good life. Dan put a lot of hard work in this, and Archer helped him a lot, even though he actually wanted to sit in the basement and play video games 😂 if you’ve ever had pasture-raised birds, you know that nothing at the store touches their eggs and meat. We only have 7 available for purchase this year, so decide early on if you want one for the holidays and get ahold of us!

•Another batch of Black Copper Maran chicks hatched, (more due to hatch in the next day or two). In the past, we’ve always brooded our chicks in a brooder with heat lamps, but this time we were lucky enough to have a few broody hens who we just haven’t been able to break. After a brief, but intense selection process, our little silkie hen has selected herself for motherhood, and accepted all 12 chicks with unlimited fluff and love. They are adorable with her, and it’s going to be hilarious in a few weeks when they’re bigger than her. But for now, she talks to them and tends to their every need like the best mommy. Mom and chicks are currently living their best life in a huge pack and play in the library, away from the elements and other chickens until the babies are bigger.

•Little Hexie got ambushed by another dog while she was busy stealing chicken food. This dog and Hexie have been going out together for months without issue, so we’re not sure what happened during this incident, and we consider it a one-off, freak event. Due to the damage Hexie sustained, they won’t be going out together again until Hexie is all healed up. This was no-one’s fault, not a behavioral cue miss on our part, and definitely not a dog fight anyone saw coming. We don’t blame this dog, and the majority of the damage is a result of the size discrepancy between the two dogs. Hexie got a whole bunch of stitches in her ear, but she’s on the mend and acting totally normal. Big thanks to our amazing friends and neighbors at Tin Star Farm who dropped everything and ran over to help Dan triage Hexie while I rushed home from work. Fortunately, there will be no lasting damage, and emotionally, she is about the most resilient dog we’ve ever had, and is already back to normal. Also a huge shoutout to our amazing vet staff at 4 Paws Animal Hospital who made room for her, despite having a full schedule. Her favorite, Dr. Kim, was already on site performing her weekly surgeries, and she squeezed Hexie in out of the kindness of her heart to make sure Miss Pig was taken care of. Dr. Kim, and the amazing team at 4 Paws have been with Hexie since the beginning, and they truly do love her like she’s their own. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with her. She is hilarious while under anesthesia though…

•And last, but certainly not least, we want to take a moment to with our very best friend Sara the happiest birthday (yesterday)! We had a great time celebrating you, and are grateful for all you have done for us over the years. We love you!

Guess what time it is?! 🙋🏼‍♀️ Again…🤦🏼‍♀️

If you said coat blowing season, you’re right. I want to take a moment to clarify that if you’re the keeper of a double-coated dog, you already know that it’s insane amounts of hair this time of year, and no matter how often or how long you brush them, the hair keeps coming…it can be discouraging. But does that mean you’re doing something wrong with their grooming?

Most likely, no. Just like people, dogs have varying degrees of coats; some are longer or shorter or thicker/denser or thinner. Some shed really easily, others hold on to the dead undercoat and it has to be physically removed by hand with machine assistance.

You know those clumps of hair that make your dog look homeless, and are so satisfying to pluck with your fingers? Imagine that, all over your dog, for weeks on end. The same dog that is brushed daily, receives de-shedding baths once per month, and is blown out dry nearly every other day this time of year…

Summer is one of these dogs. Summer got a deep scrub, de-shed, and a blowout a couple of weeks ago. She is brushed almost every day. And yet she still looks homeless, with a dull coat, uneven shedding, and clumps everywhere this time of year. Summer has a medium coat, but it is soooo dense. Because of the density of the undercoat, it struggles to shed naturally. A slicker brush does a good job, but there aren’t enough soccer balls in the world to keep her entertained while I brush every inch of her until she’s perfect. So instead, I turn to probably my favorite grooming hack-the dry blowout.

Undercoat and guard coat has to be dry in order for a blowout to be effective. If the top layer is wet, the dead undercoat will just get stuck in the hair and never blow off the dog, which is why stopping the drying portion before the dog is bone dry is useless in removing coat.

Summer is getting dry blowouts a few times per week, in addition to daily brushing, and hand stripping this time of year. She looks ratchet, but I promise she’s healthy…

If you have a dog with a coat like this, hang in there. Try a dry blowout. Trust me-it’s a game changer.

Surprise!

Apparently I miscounted, so I put this batch of BCM’s into lockdown last night. I checked them when I got home from work-nothing. An hour later while I’m gathering the trash to take down, I hear this cheeping and I can’t figure out where it’s coming from. So I follow my ears and it is coming from the incubator! We have two out, 4 more pipped, and I’m over here scratching my head and counting days on both hands and feet 😂

It’s the dog days already over here and it’s only May 🥵
