Every Sunday—rain or shine—our dedicated volunteers show up at the Contra Costa Animal Services for Sunday School with the dogs.
They walk, train, play, and love on pups who need it most, helping them shine for adopters and feel seen in a busy shelter.

Feel Good Friday!
We’re so happy to share this sweet update on James from his new family!

“James spent his first day checking out the bedroom, the window sills, and hiding in his condo behind the plant. At 7am, he was batting at the closed shades—he wanted his view back! He enjoyed about ¾ cup of Blue Buffalo dry food (salmon flavor, of course). I picked it up halfway through and gave him the rest for dinner. Looks like I’ll be rotating wet and dry food days moving forward. We snuggled last night, and he’s already claimed all the tall furniture as his!”

We love hearing how quickly our alums make themselves at home. Way to go, James!

MANGO: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Mango: The Cowabunga Cat"

Two-year old Mango is a strikingly handsome and delightful fella. He literally likes to hang out and watch the staff and volunteers meander around. He's very curious and watches so intently with his adorable head tilt, you feel like he's eavesdropping on (and understanding) your conversation. A typical adolescent, he can be quite charming as he meets your gaze with amusement; and when it comes to play time he can be a little bit of a jerk as he can get a little overstimulated and play hard. Mango might describe himself as a misunderstood nice guy. He has a positive history with other cats and would enjoy an understanding home who will help him grow from his awkward adolescent phase into a mature and even more charming adulthood.

Looking for double the love? Meet Jasper & Bruno — two incredibly sweet senior brothers hoping their forever home is just around the corner.

Surrendered under difficult circumstances last October, these resilient 11-year-old boys have been together their whole lives — even during a time when they lived in a car with their unhoused human. While we don’t know how long they lived that way, it’s clear they were deeply loved.

Gentle, trusting, and affectionate, Jasper & Bruno are the ultimate lap cats (yes, they’ll both try to squeeze onto your lap at once!). Their calm, friendly nature makes them instant favorites with everyone they meet.

They’re looking for a quiet, loving home where they can stay together and soak up all the cozy comforts they’ve missed. Despite how special they are, they keep getting overlooked — but we know the right person is out there.

When divorce happens, animals hurt too.

Meet Violet. She was adopted from us in 2016 as a very young cat. Violet lived happily in her home for almost 10 years until her parents divorced and her world was turned upside down. Neither parent wanted to take her so she found herself back at CCHS last September. Now Violet is 11-years old and she knows that in the throes of 'kitten season', older cats like her will continue to be overlooked even more. She has lived as an only pet all her life and would prefer to keep it that way. Through resilience and out of necessity, she has learned to be independent. But she's still very curious about life and humans even if through the lens of a little distrust and disloyalty. She is currently living in the office of one of our staff and has learned to build a loving and trusting rapport with her. Violet can be found snoozing under a blanket, playing gently with her catnip banana toy or on a chair sandwiched between our staff member's backside and back of the chair. She's obsessed with two particular brands of cat treats (which we'll tell you about). While we love the rapport she's built with staff, she deserves a forever home of her own. She would do best in a calm, pet-free, adult-only home that is content with letting her call the shots and establish the boundaries.

Adoption update!
Link was adopted (again!) back in October after being returned when his previous adopter moved out of the country. Now he’s living his best life—and him and his brother are total besties!

After Life's Storm…Her Search for Her Forever Sanctuary

8-year old Wren was abandoned at a local vet hospital almost 3-years ago by her owner who struggled with substance abuse. Since her abandonment, Wren has lived at the vet hospital, then in a foster home. She has been loved on and enjoying a very loving, stable and predictable home since she was left behind. Abandoned but not broken, she holds no grudges about all the uncertainty of her former homelife but wants to find her own forever home. Wren doesn't ask for much – just a calm, stable home where love isn't complicated. A place where meals come regularly and affection isn't tied to someone's sobriety.

Wren's healthy, sweet, and carries wisdom in her gentle eyes. Yes, she's a bit shy at first – trust is something she builds carefully now – but the bond she'll form with you will be unbreakable once earned. Wren feels she hasn't yet found the perfect home that she deserves. Are you the one? The person with a quiet home, an adult household free of other pets, and most importantly, a patient heart? Wren has been waiting for you. For the person who understands that some treasures reveal themselves slowly, and that loving an older cat means embracing a soul who knows exactly what she needs.

This is a common myth about volunteering with animals🐾

The truth is, it’s natural to fall in love with the animals you care for, but most volunteers find joy in seeing them go to loving homes. Helping them along their journey gives you a sense of fulfillment, and not every volunteer ends up with a new pet (though it’s certainly a possibility!).
