Good afternoon, volunteers and friends:
We want to make you aware of an equine health concern that is currently developing in Texas. There has been a confirmed EHV-1 outbreak traced back to the Waco area, which has already impacted other states. Because this disease is highly contagious, we are taking the time to inform you of this situation and inform you of what we are doing to protect the animals at TMR.
At this time, we are restricting new intakes that may have had any possible contact with infected equines or with humans who have recently handled horses, donkeys, or mules in affected areas. These precautions help us reduce risk while we monitor the situation.
There are no changes to your volunteer procedures at the facility right now. However, we want everyone to stay informed and understand that we may update handling protocols if we identify any potential threat to our herds.
We encourage you to review reliable EHV-1resources, such as:

Be mindful of common infection vectors, including shared tack, clothing, footwear, and contact with outside equines in the affected areas.
Thank you for your continued care, awareness, and support. We will keep you updated as the situation evolves.
