Kind of chic to embrace your rescue dog’s true self. 🩷🐾
When we bring home a rescue dog, it’s easy to start imagining who they’re going to become once they finally feel safe. Like my lab mix I assuned would love the water🤦♀️
But what if the greatest gift we can give them isn’t becoming anything at all?
Every rescue dog arrives as a unique individual with a story we may never fully know. Some have known love and security and lost it. Some have experienced abandonment, neglect or constant change. Others may simply have never had the opportunity to safely explore the world and figure out what they like, what they don’t, and who they are.
Those experiences can shape how they move through the world today.
Sometimes, the things we’re quickest to label as a “behavior problem” may actually be fear, uncertainty, self-protection or communication.
CDD has challenged me to shift the question from “How do I change this?” to “What is my dog trying to tell me?”
Because the goal isn’t to erase who they are in pursuit of the dog we imagined.
It’s to create enough safety, trust and understanding that they finally get to show us who they’ve been all along.
And honestly? Kind of chic. 🩷
🐾 Do you think your rescue dog is different today than the dog you first brought home?
