🪴 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Potato
• Choose a firm, unblemished sweet potato.
• You can cut it in half if it’s large — each half can produce slips.
• Let any cut surfaces dry for a day or two to prevent rotting.

2. Prepare the Soil Bed
• Fill your container with moist, well-draining soil (about 4–6 inches deep).
• Place the sweet potato half-buried lengthwise (cover the bottom half with soil, leave the top half exposed).
• OR bury it completely under 1 inch of soil for more even sprouting.

3. Keep It Warm and Moist
• Sweet potatoes sprout best in warm temperatures (75–85°F / 24–29°C).
• Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy — overwatering causes rot.
• Place the container in a sunny window or under a grow light for 12–14 hours a day.

4. Watch for Sprouts
• In 2–4 weeks, you’ll see green shoots (slips) emerging from the potato.
• Allow them to grow until they’re 6–8 inches tall and have several leaves.

5. Separate the Slips
• Gently twist or cut each slip from the potato.
• Remove the lower leaves from the bottom 2 inches of the stem.

6. Root the Slips (Optional but Recommended)
• Place slips in a jar of water so the bottom ends are submerged.
• Within a week, they’ll develop roots.
• Once roots are 1–2 inches long, plant them in the garden or pots.

🌞 Bonus Tips
• If your home is cool, place the container on a seedling heat mat or above a fridge to keep it warm.
• You can keep reusing the same mother sweet potato to produce multiple batches of slips over a few weeks.
• Sweet potatoes like loose, sandy soil when transplanted — they form better roots that way.
