A letter to our clients, friends and communities,

Beginning on May 9th, 2025 for The Animal Hospital at the Crossroads (Phillipsburg) and May 23rd, 2025 for The Animal Hospital (Plainville) all general appointments and large animal work will cease. All emergency work will cease on May 5th, 2025 for both clinics.

Dr. Lauren Mack will transition to a consultation and reduced services status for both practices. It is our intention to sell these practices to new owners when this time comes. However, starting on the aforementioned dates, all regular and emergency services will conclude, and Dr. Mack will be available on a limited and consultative basis.

After 11 years of serving Rooks, Phillips and surrounding counties, I cannot overstate the gratitude I have for all the wonderful relationships fostered. My teams have had the privilege of working with your large and small animals as well as your families. We have stood with you on some very bright days and some very dark days, and we take great pride in having stood with you. At the same time, despite tirelessly battling numerous challenges and circumstances over the last 5-plus years, it is time to transition.

Further, it is time for me (Dr. Mack) to put my family first. The demand of veterinary practice in a rural area is all-consuming and although I have taken great pride in this journey, it is simply not sustainable.

We will continue regular services until the aforementioned dates and ask you to please call your clinic for scheduling. Patients on pharmacy prescriptions can also expect those to persist for an extended period as patients transition care.

For medical records, please email [email protected].

We will also be posting other information about transitioning records in the weeks to come.

It's a bit windy...

We are working hard to get in to the clinics and get open. We are currently delayed by power surges and intermittent service and internet.

Please be patient with us and be safe!

Community Alert
Bird Flu Positive Tests in Local Cats!

We have received positive results for Avian Influenza from local domestic indoor/outdoor feline patients.

These cats demonstrated significant signs and several did not survive.

Symptoms include:

"Infected cats often exhibit severe respiratory symptoms, including loss of appetite, fever, large amounts of eye and nasal discharge, coughing, and labored breathing. Neurological signs, such as tremors, seizures and blindness, have also been reported."

And any suspect pets should be brought in to your veterinarian immediately.

Preventative Measures Include:

• Do not feed cats raw meat, especially poultry or unpasteurized dairy products.

• Keep cats indoors to prevent contact with infected birds and wildlife.

• Do not handle dead birds; report them to local health authorities instead. If you must handle one, wear protective gear, including a mask and disposable gloves.

• Keep cats away from livestock, poultry and their environments, especially in areas with known H5N1 outbreaks. Change your clothes and wash hands thoroughly after handling these species before interacting with your cat.

• Ensure rabies vaccinations are up to date, as H5N1 symptoms can resemble rabies.

Cold Calves have been the name of the our game this week!

Things we use to help those frozen calves:

Thermometer - we check every calfs re**al temperature regularly. Calves should not receive milk or colostrum until they are 99F or higher.

Karo Syrup. A good palm full of Karo Syrup (light or dark) in the mouth/on their gums increases blood sugar and give the calf's body energy to warm up!

Warm bath tub!
Not too hot to shock cold tissues, but warm enough as to increase core temperature. Make sure they are completely dried after!

Towels, hot water bottles, heaters and blow dryers - we try to gently warm the calf without damaging tissues.

A Suckle Test. Suckle response is the number 1 determining factor of calf vigor and subsequent survival. As calves "thaw" keep testing that Suckle.

A pint of warm electrolytes. Once they can Suckle, but are not up to 99F, we often have them Suckle a small amount of warm electrolytes to give them a little jump start.

You can always call us or drop off your frozen calves. We're here to help!

PSA Animal Cruelty and Injury

Today, we helped this stray, which was cared for by a citizen in Plainville.

This poor guy (who is very sweet) has been seen with a dart sticking out of his chest for 2.5 weeks now. A good citizen caught him and brought him in for care today. We found more than we expected, and this tough kitty is in recovery.

This blow dart we removed is nearly 5 inches long, has a razor broadhead, and was buried over 3 inches under this cat's chest and limb. The city has been notified.

We realize not everyone is a "fan" of the stray cat population (Please see our upcoming notices for Farm Cat Frenzy), but we do not agree with harming animals needlessly and inflicting pain.

Paws crossed for a speedy recovery!
