New technology is keeping us healthier and giving us longer lives. As with human beings, pets also are living longer. While we get more years to enjoy our 4-legged friends we should be aware that they can develop cognitive dysfunction issues. According to a study in "The Journal of Veterinary Behavior" it is estimated over 14% of senior pets have cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS). As our pet's caretakers we must be aware of changes that at first are not very noticeable; can include altered appetite, changes in personality or changes in weight. We want to keep them safe and make life comfortable for them. It could include installing a ramp so they can easily get to their favorite chair, perhaps an orthopedic bed with a heat source will make it better for them. If their eyesight becomes a problem don't leave things in their pathway for them to fall over or bump into. They may need extra care and understanding at this time.
