A fox, rabbit, and a duck and her ducklings! What a week!
🦊 A family in Clark reached out about a fox in their area with a piece of a drain pipe stuck around its neck. Marcia went over and put down a trap (tied open) with food and a camera. The family replenished the food every day. After a few days of seeing the fox go into the trap and eat, Marcia set the trap. Sunday night the trap was set and the fox went into the trap!
🐇 As we waited for the fox to go into the trap, we got a message about an injured rabbit in Summit. It had been hit by a car. Summit was on the way to Nancy at The Last Resort Wildlife Refuge where we were taking the fox so we were able to stop by Summit and scoop up the rabbit.
We drove to Nancy with a fox in a trap in the back seat and a rabbit in a box on Kelly’s lap in the front seat.
After Nancy cut the piece of pipe off the fox’s neck, we drove her back to Clark where she was released. Then Marcia took the rabbit to Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital. What a night!
🦆 On Tuesday, Kate, a friend of Kelly’s and a vet, told us about a mom duck and her ducklings that were stuck in the courtyard of a local school. The mom could leave the courtyard but the ducklings could not. There was no access to food or water in the courtyard. Kelly and Kate went over to the school and scooped up the ducklings into a box. We tried to lure the mom duck through the door, across the hallway and out the door of the school. The mom wasn’t interested but she did start flying up to the top of the wall that separated the courtyard from the outside of the school. We took the babies in the box to the other side of the wall and the mom finally figured out they were there. She flew down to the grass and we released the babies from the box. Then they all waddled away, down to the brook behind the school.
