I have been really struggling the past few weeks with what to do with my rattery since we got bordetella. It is a common pathogen but not one many people know how to handle. I know one breeder who was successful in getting rid of it. She spent around 4k working it out. I can't ask my followers and friends to keep donating to rats who keep passing away and our financial situation is not great at the moment.
I think it would probably be best for us to take a major step back from breeding. I was always just a rat mom first. I only started breeding because I couldn't find good rats in my area so I started making my own.
We will be letting all of our standard rats live their lives and pass away as they need to. I will be keeping 2 dwarf lines alive for myself due to their og breeders closing their doors. I have no current plans on reopening to the public. It is irresponsible to adopt out rats with this bacteria being carried in our colony.
I do hope once all of our standard babies go and numbers are reduced, I can take on the project to get rid of it from the dwarfs.
Anyways, that's where I'm at right now. We will have a couple dwarf litters since they were about to age out but they will all have to stay and even with those I do not know, they might also be our last. I am completely worn out. Their deaths are always traumatizing.
