I genuinely believe every dachshund owner should have pet insurance. 🤎
And I say that as someone who completely understands the mindset of thinking, “We probably won’t need it. That kind of thing won’t happen to us. And if it does, we’ll just use our savings.”
I’ve had those same thoughts.
But the reality is, things can change so quickly.
As dachshund owners, we’re loving a breed that is predisposed to spinal conditions like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). A dachshund can be running around seemingly perfectly healthy one day, and experiencing severe back pain, neurological deficits, or even paralysis the next.
And beyond breed-specific health concerns, we all know how mischievous these little dogs can be!
They’re curious, determined, and so close to the ground that they can grab something they shouldn’t before we even realize what’s happening. A toxic mushroom, a dropped medication, or a swallowed object can turn an ordinary day into an emergency vet visit.
In those moments, you’re already dealing with so much emotionally. You’re scared for your dog, overwhelmed with information, and trying to make the best decisions for them.
The last thing you want is the added stress of wondering how you’re going to afford their care.
Pet insurance doesn’t mean every expense will be covered, and it’s important to research policies carefully. Look into coverage for hereditary conditions (including IVDD), emergency and specialist care, advanced imaging, surgery, reimbursement limits, waiting periods, and exclusions.
But having the right coverage in place before something happens can make an enormous difference.
As a breeder, I want every puppy I produce to have the best possible chance at receiving the care they need throughout their life. And I want their families to feel prepared for the unexpected.
Please don’t wait until you’re wishing you had insurance to look into it. 🤎
