Arlo has had a busy day! At 6:30 this morning he joined me for yoga, being a total mat hog. He’s a great teacher of Upward Facing Dog and Downward Facing Dog though! Later we spent 90 minutes visiting patients at a local nursing home. On one floor he said hello to at least five people who are struggling with dementia, and every one of them went from completely neutral faces to beaming. Apparently Arlo’s silky ears have some magical properties. He was so good and so patient. I’m a very proud dog mama right now. Time to join the tired boy for a nap on the couch.

I took Arlo to his Veterinary Neurologist for bloodwork today. When the vet tech on duty came out to greet us she brought this message with treats from one of the other techs who was off today. She knew Arlo was coming by but couldn’t be there today. ❤️❤️❤️

At Arlo's Friends, we are dedicated to donating a minimum of 10% of profits to non-profit pet welfare organizations. Maybe someday the 10% profit from the dog treats business will amount to something significant, but for now the donations come out of our personal pockets, which John and I are happy to do. Last year all of our donations went to an organization called Old Dogs Go To Helen, run by Helen and her incredible family from their home. They take in senior and hospice dogs who would otherwise be euthanized or poorly cared for due to a variety of reasons. Helen tells the story of each dog as they join the home. She also tells the stories after the dogs leave this world. I have needed to shut down my phone mid-story on many, many occasions when I can't read through the tears any longer. I am so thankful that Helen and family do this work. Please take a look at their page and make a donation when and if you can.

A couple of weeks ago I had a big baking day for two local breweries. I thought I’d share some photos of that process. The picture of the ingredients shows all that goes into our dog treats. Sometimes the grains are darker, producing a browner final version of the treats. After mixing the dough I roll it out to 1/4 inch thickness, cut it into small squares (so even small dogs can enjoy these easily) and hearts (each bag contains at least one heart which can be broken into smaller pieces). Then they go onto heavy duty baking sheets and are baked for 45 minutes at a low temp to brown them up a bit. The final step is in the dehydrator for several hours to make sure they come out nice and crunchy for our crunch lovers. It’s a pretty long process but seems to be working well for now. Oh and label making is a whole other story…I will just say that if you’ve ever wondered why the labels don’t all look exactly perfect and alike from one to another, just know that this is an ongoing process of “continuous improvement “, haha.

We had a great morning at Merrimack County Nursing Home one day this week. All of the folks on our list to visit that day were alert and interactive, which was so nice for us.

Arlo loves a cool summer morning with wet grass to slide in. Note the grass on his tongue and teeth.🤣 There is nothing like a good bite of healthy grass along with a frisbee catch.

Arlo had a tough week. He spent a night at the emergency vet clinic due to cluster seizures that did not diminish even after giving “cluster buster” meds. He has been dealing with his epilepsy for about a year and a half now, and we are still adding and adjusting meds according to the recommendations of the veterinary neurologist. We will start a fourth daily medication this week. Here’s a pic of him the day after he came home. He woke up and couldn’t walk a straight line or keep his feet firmly planted on the floor. We took him to the beach where he was able to get a grip on the sand and go for a nice safe walk with Ellie and his new cousin, Luna.
