We think peak season came and went? We’re not sure yet… it’s too close to call. Regardless, it seems we did everything we said we would. We made peace with the nightshades, became one with our storage crops, and even grew the pumpkin patch! (pumpkins loading). But now it’s raining and we’re back to harvesting carrots. Seasons are crazy like that, they end right when you think they never will. Now it seems like we blinked and missed everything. Luckily we took a lot of pictures. 😎🌞🌻👙🍉🕶️⛱️

HUF INTROS: Ezra Raupach-Learn 🐤🥖🧑‍🍳🍅
Ezra is one of two Farm Program Assistants. He helps with a variety of tasks throughout the farm, focussing his energy in the Community Farm growing vegetables for pantries. He joined Hilltop Urban Farm this last spring after spending the last two years working for the Penn State Student Farm.
“There is a significant need in the surrounding neighborhoods for fresh, healthy vegetables, and I am honored to help fill in that gap with the work I do at Hilltop Urban Farm.”

Ezra is passionate about land stewardship. For him farming is not just about growing vegetables, it is about regeneration,.

“Hilltop Urban Farm is remediating land that has been neglected and forgotten for many years. We are putting a tremendous amount of hard work into healing the soil so that something good may come out of it. When we grow food on this land, we are not only feeding people but also the soil.”

Ezra’s favorite part of the job is getting to spend the day in nature observing the daily rhythms of the plants and animals that call the Hilltop their home.

“I enjoy coming to the farm very early in the morning before the sun has peeked over the trees, and the air is cool and quiet. I like to see how the plants have grown and changed since the previous day. I like to listen to the birds and know their names.”

Ezra is a true student of nature. Enjoying bird watching and plant identification he often brings binoculars to check out which birds have taken roost on the farm for any given week. This love, as in with most farmers, often translates to cooking. He loves to bake, especially sourdough. He is also interested in fermentation and experimenting with different kombucha flavors. He likes to learn languages with a sizable Duolingo streak and has even lived in Germany. Ezra is kind and patient and loves hard work that pays off. He loves to w**d and to observe the little things, always staying mindful and present. We could learn a lot from Ezra.

HUF INTROS: Wiley Ford 🥳🌀🌻🍄🪴

Wiley is the community farm coordinator. They manage operations in the community farm plot and communicate with pantry organizers to grow produce in line with community needs. They joined Hilltop Urban Farm in 2023 coming from an extensive background in farming. Originally from Louisville, they majored in environmental studies focusing on socioeconomic injustices in our food system.

“I believe access to fresh and nutritious food is a fundamental human right. I feel very lucky to have scored a job that lets me direct my growing experience and love of food towards getting the best vegetables we can grow to people who need it most.”

Wiley is inspired by the possibilities urban farms offer to the community, especially by increasing green spaces in areas that have been systemically cut off from them.

“Getting to learn how to grow their own food, how to cook, or even just having a beautiful place to run around and decompress are invaluable for a young person’s development.”

Wiley’s favorite part of the job is interacting with members of the community and connecting over food.

“I love running into people when we do deliveries to pantries and chatting or swapping recipes. It is always wonderful to hear what people are doing with our veggies and flowers. I take requests, too! I love hearing stories from people who used to live in St. Clair Village. It gives me a much richer understanding of the history of the land we work on.”

In their free time Wiley engages in an extensive list of hobbies. They love rock climbing, cooking, making woodblock prints, and playing the fiddle and the banjo. They were even in the circus. Wiley is insanely lucky according to the fact that they find four leaf clovers weirdly often. Clearly a jack of all trades, Wiley is great at running a vegetable farm, something that requires expertise in a lot of different subjects as well as a lot of patience and learning. Wiley is always fun to be around and their passion for people and the earth bleeds through everything they do. We ❤️ wiley. 🍀🎻🪕🎪🎡🌻🍅🌾🐈

HUF INTROS: Brian Wiltrout😎🐶🍄🔥🍔

Brian is the manager of the Farmer Incubator Program. He focuses on creating opportunities for current incubator farmers and rehabilitating the soil to support future growers. Brian joined the team in August of 2024. He has built his life around food with twenty years of experience in the food service industry. In his own words he has inched himself closer and closer to the source.

“These experiences helped inform a desire to deliver high-quality, nutrient-dense food in an equitable way to the local community.”

Brian is interested in the concept of a community or neighborhood farm and what that means for the future of farming in general. Attempting to adress market failures that create food deserts at the hyper-local level is a process of trial and error. The inherent creativity that comes with the job is something that Brian is passionate about.

“It would be awesome if this farm could continue to build on its functions as a resource for this community, both in food production and as a space to grow, learn and be outside!”

Brian’s favorite part of the job is leading groups of volunteers to tackle a big task. Soil remediation requires an immense amount of labor, without volunteers the job would be impossible.

“It’s really cool to interact with folks with all different backgrounds and work styles, to complete (an often very physically challenging) job together. Having the opportunity to teach others helps me realize what I know from my own experiences; and I usually learn something new from them too!”

Outside of work Brian operates his own veggie and flower farm with his wife Lindsay. He is an avid homesteader and loves to cook and preserve food whenever possible. He loves animals, keeping ducks and chickens and dogs and cats and whatever else wanders in. As a native Pittsburgh resident he also loves to be on the river. He can waterski but is apparently just ok at it. Brian is goofy, fun, and a hard worker but also knows the importance of stopping for an ice cream break. When it all comes down to it his focus is sharing good food with good people and we think he is in the right place. We ❤️ Brian!

We had a brief hiatus but we are BACK with HUF INTROS: Introducing Sophia Sanders!🦂🌹🌙

Sophia is the Youth Programs and Volunteer Manager. Wearing two separate hats Sophia oversees both youth programming in the youth farm and farm wide corporate volunteer events. Hilltop urban farm is meant to be a community resource and Sophia’s position is all about bringing community to the farm. She joined the farm in late 2024 with a background in international development focusing on women’s cooperations and agriculture in East Africa. She completed a local horticultural workforce development program and has always grown food as a hobby.

“ I never expected to find a role that combined my master’s in international development with my passion for local food systems—but Hilltop Urban Farm is a perfect fit. It’s been deeply rewarding to shift from a global focus to a hyper local one, from macro to micro, while staying rooted in the power of growing food for individuals and communities.”

The Idea of community work being both macro and micro fits in well for Sophia’s vision of HUF’s future.

“Hilltop is turning land that could have fallen vacant and overlooked into something the community can actually use. It’s not just about what we grow today, but about creating the conditions for others to grow long after us.”

One of Sophia’s favorite parts of the job is the energy the kids bring to the farm.

“Watching kids discover the youth farm—when they light up after spotting a flower in their favorite color, or when they try a radish they planted themselves. Those grins, their pride, it makes the space feel joyful, like it’s truly theirs. That’s when Hilltop Urban Farm feels most like the community resource it’s meant to be.”

Outside of work Sophia loves to travel. She has visited 28 states, 15 countries, and has lived in 4 of those countries. She hails from the Pacific Northwest and is probably going to that concert you were thinking of. She is generous, thoughtful and supportive, with the keen ability to see herself in others. She loves her dogs and her Dahlias and is always down to get coffee. We love Sophia!🌎💫🔥🏔️🪩💃☮️🥀

HUF INTROS: First up Liz Metzler!!!🌸🌸

Liz is the Director of Farm Programs at HUF. She offers guidance to each of our programs, develops partner relationships, and works to create new programming initiatives that support our community. Liz joined Hilltop in Spring 2022 carrying the belief that access to food is a fundamental human right.

“I have always wanted to work within the food system through a lens of care work. We offer the freshest food to our patrons, so our neighbors can be healthy and strong.”

Liz believes that Hilltop’s work is important because food access, farmland access, and youth education are disproportionately impacting the communities we work within.

“Hilltop Urban Farm is doing its best to put a dent in the disparities. In uncertain times we rely the most on community efforts to feed each other and teach our children. I think now, more than ever, we have a responsibility to serve our neighbors with compassion, dignity, and the freshest produce available.”

Liz’s favorite part of working at HUF is the August U-Pick. She loves hearing from our pantry patrons about recipes they made with our produce and meals they are planning in the future.

Liz has a great sense of humor, loves her crazy farmdog Cowboy, and… just had a baby! In her own words this is her first year growing a different type of sprout. After work she can be found teaching yoga or tending to her garden. Without making her sound too “woo woo” (she’s a Virgo) Liz cares deeply about her neighbors and the planet; and is overall a joy to be around. We love Liz! 💐🌱🥕💪😜💁‍♀️🌙🌟🌀♍️

We can’t believe our growing season is already halfway over. Upon reflection, we realized that HUF has grown a lot this year as well. We started from humble beginnings and made a lot of mistakes. Hopefully learning from them, we’d like to take this moment to reintroduce ourselves.

This year we’ve:

•Expanded our community farm, growing new crops like potatoes and onions — potentially doubling the pounds of food we’re able to donate to our partner food banks
•Added a new incubator to the Farmer Incubation Program
•Begun soil remediation projects on two new fields
•Partnered with Penn State Extension to host an integrated pest management workshop
•Increased the number of days youth spend on the farm and expanded our network of youth partners
•And on top of all that — our Farm Director had a baby!
We’re feeling a strong sense of momentum as we move into the hardest part of the season and continue to grow — personally, professionally, and as a team — in order to better carry out our mission of growing food, farmers, and community.

Speaking of farmers, our organization has grown by four new staff members over the past year. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing our crew so you can get to know us a little better.

Thank you for all of your support as we work to end food apartheid on the Hilltop and move toward a future rooted in a more equitable and sustainable food system for all. We look forward to growing with you to create the future we want — and deserve. ⭐️🦋🌈🌸🌷
