Here are 6 Tips to keep your furry friend safe this summer.
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Just like us, dogs can get dehydrated too. Always ensure your dog has access to fresh water, especially when you’re out and about.
2. Avoid Hot Pavements: If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when the pavement is cooler.
3. Never Leave Your Dog in the Car: Even with the windows down, a car can quickly become a furnace in the summer heat. If you can’t take your dog with you when you leave the car, it’s best to leave them at home.
4. Watch Out for Heatstroke: Dogs can’t sweat like we do, so they’re more susceptible to heatstroke. Signs include excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to a cool place and call a vet immediately.
5. Keep Them Protected from Fleas, Ticks, and Parasites: Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are more common in the summer. Make sure your dog is up-to-date with their preventative treatments.
6. Mind the BBQ: Who doesn’t love a good summer BBQ? Just be mindful of your dog. Some foods and drinks commonly found at BBQs can be harmful to dogs, and skewers or other sharp objects can cause injury.
Remember, summer should be a fun time for both you and your dog. By taking a few precautions, you can ensure it’s a safe one too!
