Pasture maintenance is important but can be challenging. Our rescue horses stay clear of most weeds, and we are always trying to find safe ways to rid the pastures of these.

The more you know...

Gastric ulcer disease is a very common problem in equines, and it affects over 60% of adult horses (depending on age, performance, and evaluated populations). While Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is more prevalent in high performance horses, it's important to remember that any horse can be affected, as all equines suffer from stress (like traveling, stall confinement, changes in diet, etc.) which over time may result in gastric ulcers.

The signs of ulcers a horse might show are highly variable between individuals, but they usually include variations of "bad behavior" like general grumpiness, reluctance to perform, cribbing and teeth-grinding, tail-swishing and other behaviors suggesting restlessness and physical discomfort. Rough hair coat, weight loss and poor body condition are also common.

Has your horse ever expressed any of these signs that led to an ulcer diagnosis? Let us know below ⬇️

If your horse is exhibiting any of these signs, it may be time to consult your veterinarian rather than just chalk them off as behavioral or training issues. Proper diagnosis is crucial to get appropriate treatment started promptly, and your horse doctor will also be able to make recommendations for environmental and management changes that can you help prevent a relapse of ulcers in the future.

We had the honor of hosting a group of very special volunteers for the past few days. These volunteers came out to honor their fallen loved ones. They are involved with the Travis Manion Foundation, Gold Star families.

To honor their loved ones, they worked hard by taking old fencing down and a new cross fence up. They also painted some of our horse shelters.

Removing some of the t-posts proved to be a challenge but together they succeeded.

HCHR is thankful for their hard work and dedication!

Valuable information from experts!

Colic can be a stressful and scary occurrence for equine owners, and it often requires the attention of an equine veterinarian to detect the cause of the episode and to provide treatment.

One way your horse doctor may try to determine the reason your equine companion is colicking is by performing a re**al examination. Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding the equine re**al exam:

β€’ Re**al exams need to be performed by a skilled professional (your vet) or severe damage can occur to the internal structures.

β€’ Re**al exams typically do not allow a veterinarian to alleviate the reason for colic. Your vet is feeling structures through the re**um not directly on the structures themselves, and therefore cannot pull out an impaction, etc.

β€’ For the safety of the patient and your veterinarian, as well as the nature of the procedure, sedation is often required.

β€’ NEVER perform a re**al exam yourself while waiting for the vet to arrive, as this could result in life threatening tears in the re**um and/or colon.

If you have questions or concerns that your equine companion may be colicking, please contact your veterinarian.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

We want to send a huge THANK YOU to Dr. Jafar and staff from Kendall County Veterinary Center! Dr Jafar and staff braved the cold (well, cold for Texas) to take care of floating some our horses' teeth. The rest of the horses will be trailered in over the next few weeks.

Lucky did very well even though he has wave mouth! Paloma feels better after all the points were filed down. Joey was still feeling lazy after his float and is almost ready to head off to training.

More details about Joey's upcoming adventure soon!

We should try this with Buck in the gelding herd. Sometimes we lose track of him with the big guys.
