Are you team skin off? Or team skin on? And why?

I personally am a skin on person, it elevates the flavor. This is also my preferred presentation that’s provided to the consumer unless otherwise requested.

With proper scald & technique it’s just about as fast as spatchcock and removing skin.

But I want to hear your thoughts. What do you prefer and why?

I blinked and this community has grown to 10k strong! I’m literally in awe as this page just started as a glimpse of wanting to share my love of being more self-sufficient. Working alongside nature, not against it & sharing what I have learned with all of you! Plus shenanigans because why not 🙃

Someone just got told they are about to become a father…

I really wasn’t planning to hatch any bantam Amerucauna babes until Fall, but….they keep laying 🫣 so threw some in. Currently at 100% fertility 🙌 hoping some self-blues make an appearance 🤞🏻

Follow along for our next hatch!

Today was lockdown, we have lots of projects going on, so… that means they need to be carefully tracked.

As I pull eggs for incubation I write on them to ID what pen or project they came from before setting. I write in permanent marker, some people use pencil or wax crayons. Either works fine.

At lockdown the eggs get placed in separated or sectioned off hatching baskets. There are other ways to separate based on your incubators ability. Mesh bags, garment bags, Ect..something they can safely hatch in and be kept separate. I like the hatching baskets and these here are the ones made by hatching time.

At hatch I then know who is who based on the egg markings. Once hatched we inspect and mark the chicks. To be continued in a few days….

Why raise toward a standard?

Something I hear & see all the time. “I don’t care about standards/SOP, they are just for meat. “

Did you realize that for meat production animals that a Standard is written with that in mind? The pieces and parts that have been noted to fit together to produce an animal that would give you the best carcass and yield?

So if you are wanting to reach max meat potential breeding and raising towards standards helps you towards that goal. No matter if you are just feeding the family or the consumer all the work you put in deserves the maximum reward.

**and please note, no matter how great your genetics are an animal will never reach its full potential without great nutrition. Those genetics require the nutritional building blocks to meet or exceed expectations**

The four stooges, one buck, three does, giving them all another month before I make final cuts. This time of year is always challenging to get weight on buns. It’s hot and no one wants to eat much.

I’ve got some exciting breedings planned for Fall and some new genetics I’m looking forward to diving into!
