Rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit!

Oh Sweet September…

August packed its bags with summer dreams, September unpacked with autumn schemes.

Our Florida growing season has officially begun!

The goal no matter what we do here is to leave space to co-exist, to find balance, to regenerate and not destroy.

Leave more than you take 💚

Hey, everyone! We unfortunately had a house fire that started from a fan shorting out.
Dani and I made it out of the house with her cat and Nismo, but the fire took our entire garage, which was our home base for all of our quail. None of our coturnix quail made it out, and the cages didn't make it either. It is very devastating losing all the work we put into our birds and how far we've come with them. We have a place to stay in the meantime, but we will not be fulfilling any egg or foam orders at this time. We will be continuing our journey with our quail, just with a setback. We would appreciate any donations to help during this time to get us back on our feet! Thank you so much ❤ If you’d like to donate, I will link our go fund me or you can scan the qr.

Is rabbit meat the answer to our protein predicament?
No rabbit will never be beef, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put something else on your fork!
Let’s talk about.
A single breeding trio, two does and one buck, can produce between 150 and 400 pounds of dressed meat in a year, depending on the type of rabbit breed you choose and intensity of your breeding schedule.
A healthy doe averages 4-6 litters per year, with 6 to 12 kits per litter. Kits are typically harvested at 8 to 12 weeks of age, at 5-6lb live rabbit yields a dressed carcass of roughly 3-3.5lbs.
See how quickly those numbers are adding up?
Rabbits don’t require acres of grazing. They have one of the highest meat to bone ratios and feed converters. And most folks can keep rabbits quietly in their backyards, without permitting or huge infrastructure. You don’t need fancy processing equipment or machinery to harvest their meat and you can cook rabbit in any recipe as a chicken substitute.
We haven’t even touched on their furs and manure byproducts, a side hustle that pays for itself.
So I’ll ask you again, why aren’t you raising meat rabbits yet?

Fun times at the NFRCBA show in Green Cove yesterday. Got to meet some people finally in person for the first time after chatting online for years and spend time with some of my favorite people!

We did bring home some wonderful comments and a few ribbons with Black Sheep Farm & Rabbitry Tater & Serendipity, and it makes me so excited to head into this next season with a strong foundation. I look back at where we started and have seen nothing but improvement year after year. The biggest year has been this one!

No matter what you are raising, remember Breed the best, cull the rest.

And we’ve got tassels! This is my first go for a Fall corn harvest. I’ve only attempted Spring sweet corn and that was successful after many failed attempts.

Corn is not for the faint of heart in our subtropical Florida climate. It takes a lot of observation. I’m taking what I learned during Spring harvests and tweaking it for this Fall bunch. Will I fail? Possibly..but I won’t go down for not trying!
