Potomac Horse Fever infections are in full swing!

Potomac Horse Fever spreads through the ingestion of aquatic insects such as Caddisflies and Mayflies. To protect your horses from ingesting infected insects, ensure your food and water sources are not under the light as it will attract the pests. This doesn't only apply to exterior lights. If you don't need your barn lights on, turn them off, and strategically place water buckets and hay out of from under lighting. The pest will fall into the water or hay and die, contaminating the food source and resulting in accidental ingestion and infections.

Symptoms of Potomac Horse Fever

- High fever
- Diarrhea
- Poor Appetite
- Lethargy
- Depression
- Mild colic
- Abortion in pregnant mares
- Acute laminitis resulting in founder

If you suspect your horse is showing clinical signs of Potomac Horse Fever, be sure to get in touch with your primary care veterinarian immediately, or you can contact the clinic at 636.332.5373.

NOTE: A vaccine is available for Potomac Horse Fever; however, it does not cover all strains. We highly recommend that horses with access to natural bodies of water, ponds, lakes, and streams receive an annual vaccination.

Horses' eyes have built-in sunglasses.

You may have noticed several tiny round black objects hanging down from the upper edge of your horse's pupil.

This is called the corpora negra.

These help to keep out some of the sun's bright light from the pupil but does not interfere with vision.

Signs of Sleep Deprivation in Horses

Yesterday we talked about the three different types of sleeping positions and related levels of sleep.

Today we'll talk about what happens if you horse can't reach RPM sleep for several days in a row.

In nature, a herd of horses may have easily been followed by a pack of wolves for days.

For this reason, horses can reasonably go several days without REM sleep, however if this continues for very long, we'll begin to see the side effects creep up in behavioral issues.

In our domesticated world, a horse may not be able to reach REM sleep in a stall (where their senses are interfered with by walls and a roof), being alone (there's safety in numbers), in a paddock next to a road, near an airport, etc.

Symptoms of sleep deprivation:
🐴 Complete collapse
🐴 Collapse of the front end into a bowing position
🐴 Increased drowsiness during the day
🐴 Poor performance
🐴 Irritability
🐴 Fetlock or knee abrasions from falling
🐴 Lack of appetite

It's important to note that sleep deprivation and narcolepsy are two different conditions that often look the same.

A vet can help you diagnose the difference.
