NOTICE: Independent Investigation into Certification Standards and Practices of Dog Training Organizations: CCPDT and IACP

In response to growing concerns regarding potential harm and negligence associated with certification standards of the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, Inc. (CCPDT) and the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), we are formally initiating an independent, fact-finding investigation into these organizationsโ€™ practices.

Specifically, CCPDT and IACP openly certify trainers who are permitted to use outdated, aversive methods, including shock collars, prong collars, and choke chains, on dogs belonging to members of the public.

These methods have been scientifically linked to many behavioral issues including increased aggression, anxiety, fear-based behaviors, and deterioration of the dog-guardian relationship.

We are currently gathering documented evidence and firsthand accounts involving CCPDT or IACP certified trainers, particularly in cases where dogs or guardians experienced:

โ€ข Increased aggression or reactivity
โ€ข Heightened fearfulness or anxiety
โ€ข Avoidance or withdrawal behaviors
โ€ข Suppressed or shut-down behavior
โ€ข Physical injuries or trauma linked to training methods
โ€ข Increased stress-related behaviors (e.g., repetitive pacing, licking, excessive panting)
โ€ข Behavioral deterioration leading to rehoming or euthanasia
โ€ข Veterinary expenses or medical interventions due to training-related harm
โ€ข Emotional distress for dogs or their guardians
โ€ข Significant financial or emotional burdens resulting from inappropriate training methods

This fact finding investigation is not aimed at individual trainers. Rather, our goal is addressing broader systemic issues within these certification organizations that potentially compromise public safety and animal welfare and are known to result in the problems listed above.

We welcome confidential contributions from dog guardians, industry professionals, credentialed experts, legal experts, consumer advocates, and those experienced in animal welfare.

Current or former affiliates, members, or insiders from CCPDT and IACP who have knowledge of internal policies or ethical practices are strongly encouraged to confidentially share their experiences.

If you have information or insights to contribute, or if you wish to offer professional support or guidance, please reach out privately. [email protected]

Your confidentiality and privacy will be fully respected and protected.

No dog, animal or human being thrives when they are living under threat, when they are fearful, or when they are in pain. We work to eliminate the use, promotion and condonement of all aversive tools and methods in any situation with all dogs.

At the Association for Professional Dog Training International, we stand by and for dogs.

Since adopting our Standards of Practice in April 2022 (and reaffirming them in 2024 with the launch of APDT International), one core principle guides everything we do: No training or behavior scenario justifies the intentional use of aversive punishment.

This conviction is rooted in peer-reviewed science and is consistent with the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviorโ€™s position: tools designed or used with the intent of causing fear, pain, or startling (e-collars, prong/choke collars, bonkers, shaker-cans, leash corrections, harsh verbal reprimands, etc.) elevate stress, suppress learning, and increase the risk of aggressionโ€”outcomes that undermine the well-being of both dogs and the people who care for them.

As the largest association in the world for the dog training field, our communityโ€™s mission is to advance the profession through science, compassion, and education. We champion methods that safeguard welfare, build trust, and create lasting behavioral change. But a standard is only as strong as the community that lives it. APDT International is a global network of trainers, behavior professionals, veterinarians, animal care professionals, and dog lovers who believe progress happens when knowledge is shared, ideas are explored respectfully, and support flows in every direction. In support of this, all APDT International Members attest to practice within these standards and are held accountable by one of the most robust systems of ethics in the profession.

When we learn together, grow together, and hold space for one anotherโ€™s perspectives, we elevate the profession and create a brighter future for every dog-human team. If there are differing ideas or opinions, we encourage a healthy, respectful and generative conversation so all may learn and grow as a result. APDT International is a hub for information and collaboration, and we accept that progress is born through challenges to ideas. These challenges should be explored without disrespect, harassment, and personal attacks, which can be significantly diminished as we value science over opinion and prioritize data over hearsay.

Letโ€™s keep building this compassionate, science-driven community together โ€” one conversation, one collaboration, and one success story at a time.
