A month ago, a family outing like this felt impossible.

Today, Kali accompanied her handler to Andretti for go-kart racing, arcade games, family time, and all the excitement that comes with it—and she did exactly what a service dog is supposed to do: she showed up and went to work.

Too often people look at a dog like Kali and only see the breed.

“She’s a Malinois.”

As if that alone determines what she’s capable of.

The truth is that breed matters, but training, leadership, consistency, and confidence matter more.

What you’re seeing is the result of reps. Hundreds and hundreds of reps.

A handler who committed to the process.

A dog who learned how to navigate the world with confidence.

And a team that learned how to trust each other.

Service dogs should be held to a higher standard because their handlers depend on them in moments that matter most.

Today wasn’t about go-karts or arcade games.

It was about freedom.

The freedom to enjoy time with family without anxiety, without stress, and without wondering if your dog can handle it.

We couldn’t be more proud of both of these girls and the work they’ve put in to get here.

This is what training done right looks like.

Three working breed dogs.

A Belgian Malinois.
A German Shepherd.
A Malinois/German Shepherd mix.

Dogs bred for drive.
Dogs bred for intensity.
Dogs bred to work.

Yet all three are calmly walking together with one handler.

Not because they’re tired.
Not because they’re perfect.

Because they understand the expectations.

People often think control comes from strength.

It doesn’t.

Control comes from leadership, consistency, and clear communication.

When your dog understands the rules, life gets a whole lot easier for both ends of the leash.

People always ask how someone can walk multiple dogs at once without it turning into complete chaos.

Truth is… the dogs are feeding off the handler more than anything.

If you’re tense, constantly correcting, reacting to every distraction, or unsure of yourself, the dogs feel it immediately.

But when the person holding the leash is calm, confident, and clear with direction, the entire walk changes.

4 dogs.
A busy mall.
People everywhere.
Other dogs.
Food. Noise. Kids.

And everyone just moving together calmly.

That’s not luck.
That’s structure, repetition, and leadership the dogs understand.

A good walk shouldn’t feel stressful. It should feel calm, controlled, and natural.

Different dogs can mean different expectations — and that’s okay.

Monty and Kali were both at the mall, but their jobs are completely different.

Monty’s expectation is to be a well-behaved dog.
Loose leash. Calm in public. Respectful around people and distractions. Able to enjoy the outing without creating chaos.

Kali’s expectation is much higher because she’s a service dog in training.
She’s expected to stay fully locked in, neutral, focused on her handler, and able to ignore everything happening around her.

Different dogs. Different jobs. Different standards.

Not every dog needs to perform at a service dog level to be considered a great dog. The goal is creating clear expectations for the individual dog in front of you and building them for the life they’re meant to live.

High drive dogs don’t need less energy.
They need more discipline.

This is Kali.
Belgian Malinois.
Extremely social. Extremely driven. Extremely intelligent.

We took her into one of the most overstimulating environments possible for a working dog… Dave & Buster’s.

Lights.
Games.
Kids running around.
Food everywhere.
Constant movement and noise.

And this right here is the hardest part of service dog training that most people never see.

Not flashy obedience.
Not tricks.
Not aggression work.

Neutrality.

The ability to stay locked in even when the world is begging for their attention.

At first, Kali struggled. You could literally watch her brain searching for engagement from every person walking by hoping someone would acknowledge her and invite her out of command. In the beginning she popped up out of her down stay a few times trying to figure out another solution to all the excitement around her.

But once expectations became clear and consistent, everything changed. She settled in beautifully.

Now, staying alert and aware of her surroundings is completely fine. A good service dog should know what’s happening around them. The goal isn’t for her to be robotic — the goal is for her to stay neutral and responsive to direction despite everything going on around her.

That’s the difference between a dog being “excited” and a dog understanding leadership.

A lot of people think tiring a dog out means exhausting them physically.
Wrong.

Mental work like this will drain a high-drive dog far faster than endless fetch ever will.

This is the kind of work that creates real-world reliability.
Not just obedience in your living room.

Today is not about a “Happy Long Weekend.”

Memorial Day is about the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice so the rest of us could live the lives we live today.

It’s about the empty seats at family dinners.
The folded flags.
The names engraved in stone.
The brothers and sisters who never made it home.

Freedom was paid for by people willing to give everything for something bigger than themselves.

Today we remember them.
Today we honor them.
And today we make sure they are never forgotten.

Gone — but never forgotten. 🇺🇸🫡

Training isn’t about teaching a dog to perform tricks when conditions are perfect.
It’s about creating reliability when freedom is present.

Off-leash work exposes the truth:
Can your dog stay neutral without physical restraint?
Can they stay mentally connected under distraction?
Can they make good decisions without constant tension on the leash?

That’s the difference between obedience and dependency.

Kali is learning that freedom does not mean chaos.
Freedom comes through structure, accountability, and clarity.

This is real-world training for real-world reliability.
