🦴Tiny Pup, Big Orthopedic Surgery: Sammie’s Story 🦴
Sammie, a 4-pound cutie with the heart of a lion 🦁 and knees that needed a little extra TLC. 🐾💕. She recently underwent two orthopedic procedures on the same knee to correct significant lameness and instability. She required surgey to restore normal function and prevent long-term joint degeneration.
🔍 Sammie was diagnosed with:
Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) Rupture — similar to an ACL tear in humans, this leads to joint instability and progressive arthritis if left untreated.
Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL) — a condition where the kneecap intermittently or permanently dislocates toward the inside of the knee.
🛠 Surgical Approach:
Sammie required a combination of surgical techniques to address both conditions in one procedure:
✅ Extracapsular Stabilization (Lateral Fabellotibial Suture)
This method uses a synthetic suture placed outside the joint to mimic the function of the damaged CCL.
It’s one of the techniques PEAK provides for correcting CCL tears. The goal is to restore stability during healing while allowing fibrous tissue to form and support the joint long-term.
✅ Medial Patellar Luxation Repair
A Tibial Tuberosity Transposition (TTT) was performed to realign the quadriceps mechanism by surgically shifting the tibial crest laterally. A block trochleoplasty was also done to deepen the femoral trochlear groove, creating a stable track for the patella.Together, these procedures correct abnormal tracking and reduce the risk of future luxation.
👨⚕️All of this was done by Dr. Savicky, a board-certified veterinary surgeon and owner of PEAK Veterinary Surgical Solutions. He travels to local veterinary clinics and performs advanced surgeries right in their hospital. 🏥✈️🐕
Every surgical plan is customized based on the pet’s size, anatomy, activity level, and degree of pathology.
🩷Sammie is recovering well and already showing signs of improved comfort — proof that even the tiniest patients can make big strides with the right surgical care! 🩷
We’re happy to discuss the different surgical options and how we tailor treatment to each individual patient.
