Honoring a legacy that continues to protect what matters most 🤍🌍 shared heartfelt words with Dr. Dean Rice’s family reminding us how deeply Dr. Rice’s spirit continues to shape the work that protects rhinos and supports the communities around them.

On World Wildlife Conservation Day, we celebrate Dr. Dean Rice, his family, and the team for carrying his mission forward through our annual Safari experiences.

“Let’s hope we can keep this chap and all the other rhino safe because of this relationship.”

Here’s to the impact that lasts, the partnerships that protect, and a legacy that continues to inspire. 🦏

December brings celebration, reflection, and a little extra magic. ✨

🐾 International Day of Veterinary Medicine (Dec. 9) is our chance to honor the veterinary professionals who safeguard animal health every single day.

🎄 As the holiday season begins, we’re reminded of the joy and connection that animals bring to our lives and the dedicated teams who care for them year-round.

🦁 Visit the Zoo Day (Dec. 27) invites us to appreciate wildlife conservation and the veterinary teams who support zoo and exotic species.

From all of us at AzVMA, we’re grateful for the incredible work you do this season and every season. 💙

AzVMA Member Spotlight 🌟 Please join us in celebrating our AzVMA Board Secretary, Dr. Lane Smith!

From aspiring marine biologist to small animal veterinarian, Dr. Lane Smith’s career has been anything but ordinary. With an undergraduate degree in marine biology and a semester spent diving the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, he realized nothing back home could quite compare, so he shifted his passion to veterinary medicine (while still maintaining nearly 800 gallons of aquariums at home!).

Dr. Smith graduated in 2018 as part of the inaugural class Midwestern University in Glendale. His involvement as a founding MWU SAVMA member helped pave the way for his current leadership role as AzVMA Board Treasurer.

Today, he cares for cats and dogs at The Pet Wellness Center in North Phoenix. Outside the clinic, he and his wife recently welcomed a baby girl in October, joining their 3-year-old son and their two Golden Retrievers, Midas and Peach.
We’re grateful for Dr. Smith’s dedication, enthusiasm, and service to the veterinary community! 💙🐾

Allied Industry Member Spotlight 🌟 Please join us in celebrating the AzVMA 2025 Allied Member of the Year recipient: Matthew Mansour, Co-Founder of AquaCrossings!

Matthew is not only deeply passionate about serving pet parents during one of life’s hardest moments, but also an incredible partner to veterinary teams across the state.

As the co-founder of AquaCrossings, he is dedicated to providing clarity, dignity, and warmth through the goodbye process. He works closely with hospital teams offering education, workflow support, emotional care, and is committed to making aftercare a more comforting, seamless experience for families.

Matthew says that this recognition wouldn’t be possible without his co-founder, Michelle Vander Lugt, whose heart and vision helped build AquaCrossings into what it is today. 💜

A few fun facts that make him even more unforgettable:

- Matthew is a certified Master Gardener with an orchard of more than 40 citrus and stone fruit trees
- Shares his home with a “tiny zoo” of beloved pets: including Larry the cat, Bill the poodle, 20 chickens, and Dozer the 180-lb tortoise
- He loves hosting backyard dinners, orchard tours, and anything that brings people together. 🌿

📣 Help us congratulate Matthew on this well-deserved honor!
