The dog-training world lost another valued friend. Beverly Stephens has died after a lingering illness.
One of the owners of Desert Dog Obedience since 2007, Bev guided many fledgling dog owners onto the right path for training their dog. Her long experience as a breeder, trainer, and competitor meant she was incredibly knowledgeable on just about any dog-related topic. And she was always there to help! It’s 2 a.m. and your dog needs to go to emergency, Bev was there. Going to your first trial with a slightly manic dog, Bev was there too. Struggling with Fido’s behavior in the house? Bev will know what to do. Crazy-ass question about a specific dog food ingredient? If Bev didn’t already know, she researched it. She was a wealth of information and counsel, and always generous with her time.
Beverly was equally bold and determined in her personal life. She saw something she wanted to do and she went and did it. It didn’t matter if she didn’t know how…she learned. Bev was afraid of heights but she still learned to fly small planes!
Bev took pleasure in her coffee in the morning and her wine in the evening. She loved ice cream and it wasn’t unusual to find a half dozen different flavors of ice cream in her freezer. She loved her cats and over the years she had many of them.
A quieter Bev emerged in recent years, but no matter what was going on with Bev herself, she would continue to ask “how was your son” “how’s your Dad?”, ”how is that crazy dog of yours doing?” She cared, and that never changed.
I am sure that Bev was met at the rainbow bridge by the small army of dogs and cats with whom she had shared her life, including her beloved Aussie, Frank, who had passed just 8 days before her.
Missed but never forgotten, Bev lives on in the adventures we had and the stories we tell. I’d love to hear your Bev story. I’ll start with one of mine in the comments.
A celebration of Bev’s life is being scheduled for November. Look for details to be posted as soon as they are available.
