🐢 DID YOU KNOW?

A healthy tortoise shell is actually living bone.

That means shell fractures are not “just cosmetic” injuries — they can be extremely painful and medically serious.

We routinely perform advanced shell repair procedures for injured tortoises at Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center

This handsome gentleman came in for treatment of bumblefoot and was getting his nice padded foot bandages changed… but apparently we were operating on rooster time today. 🙄🐓

He became increasingly impatient and made SURE everyone in the building knew about it. 📢📢📢

Staff: trying to carefully place bandages 🩹
Rooster: “EXCUSE ME I HAVE BEEN MILDLY INCONVENIENCED” 😤

Sir. This is a Wendy’s. 🍟😂

☀️ REPTILE OWNERS: UVB bulbs are NOT forever.

Even if the bulb still produces visible light, many UVB bulbs stop producing adequate UVB long before they burn out.

This can contribute to:
⚠️ Metabolic bone disease
⚠️ Weakness
⚠️ Poor growth
⚠️ Abnormal shells or bones
⚠️ Appetite issues

Most UVB bulbs should be replaced every 6–12 months depending on brand and type.

🚨🐢 WARNING: Graphic injuries shown — but this tortoise’s story has an amazing ending. ❤️

Last fall, the Arizona Game and Fish Department responded to a devastating call… a desert tortoise had been hit by a car.

When officers arrived, they immediately realized he was someone’s pet because of his Arizona Game and Fish tag number. But despite efforts to locate his family, no owner was ever found.

They brought him to us for emergency care… and we named him Skid. 🐢

His injuries were severe. Multiple shell fractures. Torn tissue. Significant trauma. Many people would have assumed there was no hope.

But Dr. Bjornebo — a world leader in turtle and tortoise medicine, surgery, and shell trauma repair — believed Skid deserved a chance.

Skid was immediately started on strong pain medication while we carefully cleaned and stabilized his wounds. Specialized shell braces were placed to hold the fractured shell together while his body healed itself from the inside out.

For weeks, Skid wore protective bandages and received intensive care, antibiotics, and monitoring to prevent infection and help his shell repair safely.

Four weeks later… the bandages finally came off. ✨

And because he was still healing, Skid got to skip hibernation this year and spend the winter recovering safely indoors.

Then came the moment we had all been waiting for…

A few weeks ago, Skid officially had his braces removed for good.

He healed. ❤️

Tortoises are incredible animals with an amazing ability to recover when given proper medical care and time. Skid’s story is a reminder of just how resilient these ancient survivors truly are.

Thank you to Arizona Game and Fish for rescuing him and giving him a second chance. 🐢💚

Please drive carefully — especially during tortoise season here in Arizona. One moment can change their entire life.

🚨🦜 Foreign body emergency success story! 🦜🚨

Dorthey the Amazon parrot came in after accidentally ingesting the end of a latex feeding tube during hand feeding. Thankfully, her owners acted FAST and got her to us immediately 💚 Because they acted so quickly, we were able to safely retrieve the tube from her crop under sedation before it could travel deeper into her digestive tract.

✨ Dorthey did AMAZING and is feeling SO much better with that tube out of her crop! ✨

⚠️ PSA for larger bird owners:
Powerful beaks can easily bite through soft feeding tubes. For hand feeding or medication administration, we strongly recommend using catheter-tipped syringes with thicker nozzles whenever possible to help prevent accidents like this.

Great job to Dorthey’s family for recognizing the problem quickly and getting her prompt care! 🩺💚
