Know the symptoms of diabetes in pets:

Diabetes in pets is more common than you might think: it’s estimated that approximately 1 in 300 adult dogs and 1 in 230 cats in the U.S. will develop the disease. While diabetes can occur at any age, it’s of particular concern for senior pets—those over 7. Symptoms of diabetes can include:

Lethargy
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Increased hunger
Weight loss
Weakness
Cloudy eyes, especially in dogs
Poor skin condition
Females are twice as likely as males to become diabetic, and there are some dog breeds that are at higher risk as well—they include Samoyeds, miniature schnauzers, miniature poodles, and pugs.

While there’s no known cure for diabetes, your pet can lead a happy, healthy life with insulin injections, diet modification and careful blood monitoring. However, this disease remains a serious, life-threatening condition.

That’s why it’s so important to have a blood test to screen your pet for diabetes when you bring him or her in for an exam. If your pet is experiencing any of the above symptoms or you have further questions about this condition, please call us at 480-893-8423.

Giardia Is No Joke!
Pronounced jee-ARE-dee-ya, it’s not a worm, bacteria, or virus—just a simple, one-celled parasite that can make your pet (and you) feel terrible.

It’s also pretty common. While infected pets may not show symptoms right away, giardia can cause persistent diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, gas, and vomiting—and can sometimes be difficult to clear.

How does your pet get giardia? By doing what they love to do: rolling in contaminated soil or f***s and then licking themselves, or drinking from contaminated creeks, puddles, and random bodies of water.

While there are no drugs or prevent giardia, it can usually be easily treated with a few days of medication. If your pet has become dehydrated or severely ill, additional treatments or a modified diet may be needed.

The other important thing to remember is that this parasite is zoonotic meaning it can be transmitted from animals to people, although it’s rare for that to happen. However, it’s highly contagious to other pets in the household. That’s why if you have an infected pet, you should make sure to disinfect bowls, toys, bedding, litter boxes, crates, and other pet items regularly until your pet is recovered.

Have questions about giardia or have a pet with symptoms? Just give us a call at 480-893-8423 –we’re here to help!

🐾Happy Cat Month🐾

Happy Cat Month is a much needed time to emphasize the safety and happiness of our cats as much as our own. Every cat deserves a human companion and this month is all about that.

We can all agree upon one thing-a happy cat is a healthy cat. By celebrating Happy Cat Month we are potentially encouraging other cat parents to take care of their cats.

Valley pets and families need us. Lost Our Home Pet Rescue helps keep pets with the people who love them- especially during crises like homelessness, domestic violence and sudden financial hardship. We will be collecting the following items during the month of September.

* dry and wet dog and cat food , kitten and puppy formula, treats, leashes and collars, litter, medications (must be in original bottle) and cleaning supplies.

Please consider making a donation in our office during the month of September. All items are greatly appreciated.

Lots of dogs have bad breath and the common cause of bad breath in dogs is the build up of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gums. Oravet chews fight bad breath before it starts by preventing bacterial attachment.

Oravet chews contain delmopinol that coats the teeth preventing bacteria from attaching to the enamel, inhibiting plaque formation and keeping your dogs mouth protected.

Oravet chews given daily are clinically shown to combat plaque, tartar, bad breath and cleans all the way down to the gum line.

Ask us about Oravet chews at your next visit!
