Meet Shrek 🤎

Shrek is a Belgian gelding in his mid-20s and quite possibly one of the sweetest big guys you will ever meet.

Despite his impressive size, Shrek is basically an oversized puppy. He’ll follow you around just to be near you, happily soak up attention, and greet you in the morning with the cutest little knicker. He is gentle, affectionate, and genuinely seems to love being around people.

Shrek had a cardiac evaluation including an echocardiogram, which revealed a heart murmur and a leak in his aortic valve. Because of this, Shrek is not suitable for riding. He is comfortable, in zero pain, and completely unaware that there is anything different about him. As far as Shrek is concerned, life is good and there are people to love and treats to collect.

We would absolutely love to see this special guy find a home where his gentle nature can be appreciated. We think he could be especially wonderful for a therapy program that focuses on groundwork, grooming, connection, and simply spending time with horses. We could also picture him thriving somewhere like an educational farm or petting zoo, where people and children could safely experience just how gentle these enormous animals can be.

There is something pretty adorable about watching a child stand next to this massive horse, only to discover that the giant in front of them is one of the softest souls they’ll ever meet. Shrek is perfectly content being loved on, brushed, talked to, and spoiled with treats. He doesn’t need a job under saddle to have something meaningful to offer.

Sometimes a horse’s purpose isn’t carrying people on his back. Sometimes it’s simply making people smile. We think Shrek is pretty darn good at that. 🤎

Shrek is available through Obsidian Heart Animal Sanctuary to the right home or program. His heart condition will be fully disclosed and we are looking for someone who understands and is comfortable with his needs.

Riot is an almost 2-year-old German Shepherd × Belgian Malinois mix who is ready to find her forever family.

She is crate trained, knows her basic commands, and is incredibly smart and eager to learn more. She picks things up quickly and has so much potential with someone who enjoys training and continuing to work with her.

Riot is young, athletic, loving, and full of personality. With her Shepherd/Malinois brain, she would do best in a home that understands active, intelligent dogs and will give her the structure, attention, exercise, and mental stimulation she thrives on.

Last week was one of those weeks that reminds us exactly why we do this. 🤍

After coming from a kill pen, Honey spent months with us just getting to be a horse again. We weren’t in a rush—we wanted to make sure she found the right people, not just any people. Last week, we finally got to take our sweet girl to her forever home.

Then we turned around and loaded up Skeeter, Tidbit, Valentine, Morty, and of course, Nemo to start their own journeys.

It’s crazy how fast life can change for a horse. One day they’re in one place, the next they’re somewhere completely different, surrounded by strangers. I can’t help but wonder what that feels like from their side. It’s our job to make sure those changes lead them somewhere safe, where they’re loved, understood, and finally home.

Since this video was taken, four of these sweet souls have already found their perfect people. Watching them leave with families who truly love them will never get old. There really isn’t a better feeling.

Here’s to second chances… and to the ones still waiting for theirs. 🤍🐴

While our name has changed, our mission remains the same: to provide love, safety, healing, and a second chance to animals who need it most.

The name Obsidian Heart represents strength born through adversity, resilience in the face of hardship, and the unwavering compassion that drives everything we do. Every animal that comes into our care has a story, and we are honored to be part of their journey toward a brighter future.

As we continue to grow, this new name better reflects our vision of creating a lifelong sanctuary where animals can not only be rescued—but truly thrive.
