Introducing Lightning!
Lightning arrived at Phoenix Veterinary Referral and Emergency after being struck by a vehicle, not once, but twice! When he first came in, he was limping and experiencing some breathing issues. Once Lightning was stabilized, we noticed multiple scrapes on his face, shoulder, and inner right foreleg. Our veterinarian and team promptly began treatment. X-rays and blood tests were conducted, and his wounds were cleaned. To our relief, Lightning had no fractures or broken bones! He was able to return home with pain relief medication and a prescription for plenty of love and rest. Lightning is doing great!

Meet the Adorable Maui! 🐾💕

Sweet little Maui recently visited Phoenix Veterinary Referral and Emergency after taking a tumble off the couch. His concerned parents noticed he was limping and brought him in right away. After taking radiographs (X-rays), our team discovered that Maui had fractured his back left tibia.

Our Board-Certified Surgeon, Dr. Rizzo, evaluated Maui’s case and determined that a splint would be the best course of treatment for his type of fracture. Since then, Maui has been coming in weekly for bandage changes — and he's been such a trooper through it all! 💪🐶

He has just one more bandage change to go next week, and we’re so proud of his progress. Stay tuned for an update on how his final bandage change goes — we’re cheering you on, Maui! 💖

Meet Waffles!
2 years ago today, Waffles came in for vomiting and diarrhea. Abdominal X-rays (radiographs) and an ultrasound were performed and consistent with a foreign body obstruction. Waffles was taken to surgery that day where a enterotomy was performed to remove part of a toy ball from his intestines. This handsome boy recovered well from his surgery and now every year on the day he was admitted with us he visits us! We love visits like this, and we love Waffles!

It's widely acknowledged that our feline friends are secretly devising a plan to take over the world. Over time, they have seamlessly integrated into our lives, capturing our hearts with their delightful antics and entertaining behavior. On a particular day each year, June 24th, our cats appear to be especially intent on executing their world domination strategy.

Take Your Dog to Work Day was created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) and first celebrated in 1999. PSI created the day to encourage businesses to allow dogs in the workplace for one Friday each year to celebrate dogs as companions and promote their adoptions from local shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies. PSI believes that through the event, dogless co-workers will be encouraged to adopt.

Meet Simon! 🐾

Simon is an adorable 1-year-old Siamese cat who recently visited us at Phoenix Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center (PVREC) after he was found limping. On examination, Simon had abrasions on all four paw pads, as well as on his face and body.

We quickly learned that Simon’s story was anything but ordinary—he had been cat-napped from his home but was thankfully reunited with his loving family. And it turns out, Simon is quite the local celebrity! His home is none other than the neighborhood ACE Hardware store, where he is cherished by staff and customers alike. 💙

During his visit, our team cleaned and treated all his wounds with antibacterial solution. Simon went home with antibiotics, pain medications, and a trusty e-collar to help him heal comfortably.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, we absolutely loved meeting Simon. In fact, several of our team members have decided they’ll be doing all their hardware shopping at ACE from now on—just for a chance to see him again!

Get well soon, Simon—you’ve got a whole community cheering you on! 🛠️🐱💕

Pet of the Month🐾

Mochi, a spirited 7-month-old Shiba Inu that suffered a fracture to his right tibia on April 21st, 2025 while playing with a much larger dog. Despite the accident, Mochi’s resilience and energy never wavered.

He began treatment with Dr. Rizzo and her dedicated team on April 24th, 2025. With regular splinting and care, his right hind leg steadily healed over the following weeks. Mochi made each visit memorable with his boundless enthusiasm and love for cheese-flavored pill pockets during his exams.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that Mochi is fully healed! He remains the sweetest boy—always energetic, always smiling, and ready for his next adventure.

Way to go, Mochi! 💙🐕
