FROM THE INSTALLATION ARCHIVE

Getting a CT into the building is a project of its own.

Doorways, hallways, floor loading, access, and the final route into the room belong in the discussion early. This photo is a good reminder of why the delivery plan matters.

Bring your installer into the planning conversation before the room is finished.

Message CT PLAN for a checklist that covers the room, team, launch, and long-term support.

Year-end can bring steep equipment discounts.

If CT is already on your hospital’s plan, this is a good time to ask what opportunities are available and compare systems around the cases you want to see.

Look at the complete project: equipment, room preparation, installation, training, and ongoing support.

Message YEAR END to discuss current options and pricing privately.

A CT project continues long after installation day.

Work through these ownership questions early:
• Room: Which site, electrical, cooling, access, and radiation-protection requirements apply to the specific system and location?
• Team: How will new staff be trained, and how will the team refresh its skills?
• Service: Who do you contact, what support hours apply, and what is included or excluded in the agreement?

Ask how preventive maintenance, parts availability, and an unexpected interruption would be handled. Record the answers for the exact system and proposed agreement.

A clear ownership plan helps the hospital know what to expect and whom to call.

Which ownership question tends to come up latest in the process?

What makes a CT image useful?

Slice count alone does not determine image quality. Reconstructed slice thickness, spatial field of view, and reconstruction algorithms all affect how anatomy is displayed.

Thinner slices can show finer detail, but they also increase image noise. The goal is a reconstruction suited to the question your team is trying to answer.

Which would you like us to explain next: slice thickness, field of view, or reconstruction algorithms?

Confidence at the CT controls comes from practice.

Give your technicians protected time to work through patient setup, positioning, scanner operation, and image transfer with an experienced trainer.

Then repeat the workflow until the team knows what comes next and where to get help.

Have new staff members who missed the original installation training? A focused refresher is a good place to start.

Message TRAINING and tell us which part of the workflow needs attention.

Considering CT before year-end? Bring your CPA into the planning conversation now.

Section 179 may let your practice deduct qualifying equipment costs in the year the equipment is placed in service, subject to limits and eligibility.

Ask how it applies to your practice, then build a realistic equipment and installation plan around the answer.

Message CT PLAN for our planning checklist.

After install, be selective about your early caseload.

Things like forelimb lameness, sinus or middle-ear disease, dental cases, and pulmonary metastasis checks can provide clear diagnostic answers.

Use those early successes to build confidence among associates, referring clinics, and staff. Give the team time to review what the study showed and how it helped guide the next step.

Thinking about CT for your hospital? Start with three questions.

1. Which cases would we use it for?
Write down the clinical questions that come up regularly in your practice.

2. Which patients would we scan?
Consider the range of species and patient sizes your team expects to accommodate.

3. How would a study fit into our day?
Map the people, preparation, scan, recovery, interpretation, and follow-up involved.

Those answers give a system discussion a practical starting point. They also help identify the training, space, and support questions to work through next.

What is the biggest question your hospital would need answered before adding CT?

In treatment planning, where something is can matter as much as how large it is.

CT can help clinicians assess the size and location of a tumor and its relationship to nearby tissues. Cross-sectional images can support discussions about surgery or other treatment planning.

Before the study, define the questions:
• What area needs to be evaluated?
• Which nearby structures could affect the plan?
• How will the imaging findings be reviewed with the treating team?

Imaging is one part of the workup. The final diagnosis and treatment plan depend on the complete clinical picture and any additional testing needed.

What application should we explore next: orthopedic planning, thoracic imaging, or abdominal imaging?
