Today, Methodist Services’ Heritage Farm - Farm Manager Ryan Curran helped to oversee the installation of our new 8’ tall 600’ long perimeter fence in West Philadelphia! Preserving the quality & quantity of our harvest while minimizing crop loss! Great news!!

Cool mornings have had a welcome return to Methodist Services’ Heritage Farm as summer fades away. By this point all field planting has occurred & our job is to continue to coddle what is left growing. This will be the last week of harvesting tomatoes. Our Farm Manager will flip the one standing high tunnel from tomato production & plant salad greens which will help sustain our supply of mixed greens through December.

In other parts of the Farm, fields are being put to rest for the season with the application of cover crop, a mixture of winter rye, field peas, ryegrass, crimson clover & hairy vetch. Vigorous late-summer growth provided winter erosion control. The peas, clover & ryegrass will “winter kill” to provide organic matter and soil cover. The hairy vetch & winter rye will regrow in the spring to provide nutrients for crops to utilize. Sharing our harvest list created every Monday as we walk the Farm to see what is available.

It’s July! Heritage Farm’s harvest is in full swing! Bunched greens, heads of lettuce & herbs continue to produce. Tomato & peppers are so close to ripe we’re beginning to taste them. Distribution of our weekly harvest goes home with Methodist Services’ Summer campers & their parents. Feels like Summer!

As mid May approaches, we begin planting hot summer crops like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers & eggplants. About every 2 weeks, plants will need to be cultivated or w**ded to beat back the pressure of newly germinated w**d seed. In addition arugula & radishes are ready to be harvested with peas & strawberries close behind them!

Heritage Farmer Ryan Curran picked up plant starts from PHS : Pennsylvania Horticultural Society - broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, parsley & scallions. These cold, hardy plants will be planted in 2-3 weeks, since they are not hardy enough to make it through 25 degree nights! Enjoying an indoor sleepover💤💤
