As we look back to this past year, we realize that there are two ways to view things. We can either concentrate on those things that disappointed us or look at the things that enriched us. Choosing the latter allows us to use these experiences as inspiration for what we can achieve in the coming year. Whether it is a simple thing, such as a random act of kindness or, perhaps, working for a cause that has special meaning, we all have something to give to one another and to a greater cause.

Like a butterfly emerging from its Chrysalis, may the glow of new beginnings lead to a year of gratitude, mindfulness and inner peace.

It has been twenty three years since a morning which started with sunshine and blue skies turned into a day filled with sorrow and tragedy. A day which must never be forgotten.

There were many heroes that day who risked everything to save others. Some made the ultimate sacrifice. Firefighters, Police, Emergency Medical Teams and ordinary citizens.

And for many months after that day, Search and Rescue Dogs worked beside their handlers. They were not only a part of rescue and recovery, but were a source of comfort. Their contribution was invaluable.

Time passes, but the memory of the events of that tragic day must never be allowed to fade.

As we gather for Memorial Day, it is important that we take time to reflect on the real reason behind this day. We must all pause, remember and thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Our freedom and democracy are fragile. We must be sure that they are never lost or the sacrifice made by so many will have been in vain.
