“Unless an agreement is reached to reopen the government by Oct. 31 at midnight to lower healthcare costs for the average American, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits may not be distributed for the month of November.” (Camden Country, NJ website)
Your community needs you.
If you can: Send money, volunteer your time, or donate food to a local food bank. You can even buy groceries for a local family that relies on the program.
It’s not a comparison game of what is this person doing or that person. It’s about supporting the families in our community and keeping our children, elderly and all people fed.
Check what your local community food bank is in need of on their website or socials (if they have them).
Important to note: food banks operate differently, especially now during a crisis of food insecurity. Some prefer monetary donations, others prefer food drop off on specified days and times, whatever you can offer, if you can, is enough.
Some larger New Jersey food banks include:
- Center for Food Action (CFA): Located in Bergen County, CFA provides emergency food packages and homelessness prevention assistance. You can volunteer or donate to support their efforts.
- Human Needs Food Pantry: This pantry accepts donations of non-perishable food items and non-food essentials like clothing and toiletries.
- Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ): As the largest food bank in the state, CFBNJ distributes food to over 800 pantries and soup kitchens. Monetary donations can help support their extensive network across New Jersey
- Fulfill NJ (FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties): Fulfill NJ works to end hunger in Monmouth and Ocean Counties by providing food and resources. They accept donations of non-perishable food items
- Highland Park Community Food Pantry: provides fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food to those in need. Donations can be made. Check their site for details.
- The Food Bank of South Jersey: provides solutions to hunger by distributing food and teaching nutrition. You can donate to help them provide food to local South Jersey city food banks. Monetary donations preferred during this time.
