As we dive right into kitten season, it’s important we highlight one of many big reasons to ❗️

▪️Pyometra▪️

For those who have never heard this term before, pyometra is a serious and life threatening bacterial infection that occurs in the uterus of unspayed females.

Pyometra occurs due to the hormonal changes after a heat cycle, and with every heat cycle, the risk of developing it increases.

Pyometra can often mimic the signs of pregnancy (lethargy, discharge, distended abdomen), & is frequently dismissed by owners who believe their cat is pregnant and want their cat to deliver kittens.

-The only way to prevent pyometra is to get your cat spayed.

-When left untreated, it will be always be fatal.

-By the time a cat is symptomatic, the only way to save her is to get her spayed immediately (and if it needs to be done at an emergency vet, it could cost a LOT more than just having your cat fixed at a regular clinic on a non emergent basis)

Last week at our pet clinic, a client let us know her cat had been having some strange symptoms for a few days prior so we asked the vet to give her a thorough exam before administering anesthesia.

As it turned out, she had pyometra and her already being on our schedule for that day likely saved her life because she may not have made it another week.

Our partners at The Bridge Clinic who do our Tuesday surgeries were able to safely remove her infected uterus and provide antibiotics for any residual infection that remained.

With permission from her owners, a photo of what her pyo looked like is attached. After surgery she was feeling MUCH better and was able to go home to live a life free of the risk of ever being pregnant or infected again!

Please don’t wait to have your females spayed, and please always consider the health of the cat in front of you first (not “potential” kittens that could actually be an infection brewing). A fixed cat is a happier & healthier cat!

You can sign up for our FREE pet clinic using the link below which includes a spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, FVRCP vaccine, & flea treatment at NO COST to you!

It’s and this week we’re highlighting Pirate 🏴‍☠️

Pirate is a feral boy trapped by one of our volunteers who was in clear need of some medical attention on his eye 👀

When he was sedated for his neuter, it was discovered he had entropion.

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes or fur to rub against the surface of the eye which can be painful and lead to irritation of the eye.

Pirate was able to have surgery to correct it and was recovered & released back to his “home” to live a pain free life outdoors where he is happiest 🥰

It’s 🐈

This weeks featured FCF is Sunny ☀️

Sunny was a sad looking orange boy trapped for TNR but it was discovered while he was under sedation that he would also really benefit from some dental 🦷 work!

We brought him to our arsenal facility and got him situated in a feral cat set up which always includes the crate being covered with a blanket so they feel extra safe and we got him scheduled for his procedure.

He got his dental done and we let him recover for a few days while also mixing a course of wormers in his daily food to ensure he was feeling his best when he went back!

He fully recovered & tonight he was released back to his home where he has a nice feeder & was greeted by his tuxedo friend!

Every donation helps us continue to help cats like Sunny get the necessary care to live their most comfortable lives when they go back outside 🧡

🧡 February Highlight 🧡

Despite February being the shortest month, we were still able to respond to a large number of cats!

In total: 400 cats 🐈‍⬛

▪️ 167 cats were vetted through our pet clinic! This free clinic is a way for us to try to alleviate the overpopulation portion that stems from indoor pets breeding while also helping people in the community get access to free basic vet care like spay/neuter & vaccines. ✂️💉

▪️113 cats that we trapped were friendly and were either sent to one of our approved rescue partners, reunited with their owners, or found forever homes 🏡

▪️ 75 cats were released back to their outdoor homes/colonies after getting vetted 🐱

▪️45 cats are in temp holding waiting for placement to open up or had other outcomes! 🥰

We are already working our way through March and are excited to keep this momentum going! 🧡

It’s and we want to showcase our big guy Hannibal! Please take a few minutes to watch his story 🫶🏻

Hannibal was originally trapped for TNR by our trapper Zuzu but was discovered to be jaundiced when he got to the clinic. 😓Some lab work revealed he had hepatitis and would need a full course of meds over a 2 week period.

Even though he was extremely feral & aggressive, we wanted to give him a fair chance so we brought him to our arsenal facility and got him hooked up with a feral cat set up. His meds were given in his food 2x a day and we used his hisses to get a good look in his mouth since we couldn’t touch him.

Over the 2 week course, we watched the yellow on his gums slowly fade away and his energy (and fractiousness) go up!

It was finally time to take him for his re-check so we brainstormed how to get him back into a trap and were successful! 😅

The clinic cleared him for release and he was able to go back to his colony where he is happiest & has a reliable feeder.

Hannibal is one of many feral cats we have been able to provide medical care for and release and we’re super excited to start sharing our feral cat adventures with you on a weekly basis moving forward! 🖤

▪️Full disclaimer: Hannibal was handled only by our experienced staff members and we do not recommend attempting to handle a feral cat if you do not have the knowledge/experience on the safest & most effectiveve ways to do it▪️

While it’s part of our every day work, something we don’t speak enough about is caring for sick or injured feral cats.

For feral cats, the day they are taken to the clinic is most likely going to be the only time in their entire lives they are in front of a vet so it’s extremely important for us to make sure any issues are addressed.

Hannibal (lovingly named by our staff 🥴), is a prime example of a feral cat that needs additional treatment beyond the clinic.

While under anesthesia for his neuter, it was noted that he was jaundiced which prompted us to approve the clinic to run some labs. His liver values were extremely elevated and he was diagnosed with hepatitis.

For a lot of people and organizations, this may have meant euthanasia as he is extremely fractious, but for us it means we need to at least try for him since he has a decent prognosis and deserves to be released and live a good healthy life.

From the clinic he came right to our arsenal facility where he was less than thrilled to say the least. We were able to get him set up in a large crate with a feral den that allows him to feel safe and his crate is covered at all times unless one of our 2 approved staff members need to get in there. We are very lucky that he is highly food motivated and we can get all 3 of his daily meds right into his meals! We also noticed he had worms and he is being treated for those while he is here too. He goes back for repeat blood work next week to see what progress we’ve made and the ultimate goal is to get him released back to his outdoor home as soon as possible.

We know a lot of people won’t understand why we’d go to these lengths for a feral cat but our core values are based on treating every single cat as an individual who matters & that includes our feral friends.

Hannibal didn’t ask to be born outside, he didn’t ask to be feral, and he definitely didn’t ask to be sick but we can make a huge difference in his life whether he realizes it or not and we’re so excited and hopeful that he’s going to recover and be able to be released!

We will share updates on him as we have them!

Please consider a small donation towards our medical fund, every dollar helps us continue to help cats like him get the care they need and deserve 🧡

Every other week, we host up to 20 cats from Best Friends Animal Society who are brought here for our spay/neuter clinic! 😻

They arrive on Monday from shelters all over the east coast and stay with us for 2 nights! They have surgery and receive their vaccinations on Tuesday morning through our partnership with The Bridge Clinic and get to recover overnight at our facility!

This program has allowed us to help cats from so many different cities get their much needed vetting before they head to the BFAS adoption center in New York! 😊

And the best part - every time they come they also take 5 of our friendly cats that need placement to New York City with them to find forever homes ❤️

This video highlights our processes from arrival through clean up to show everyone how we’re able to make this happen!

Huge shoutout to Frank Sandy Costello, who volunteers every clean up day, and helps us get our facility back in order for the next transport 🧡
