Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control Volunteer-based crew helping the animals of Petersburg, VA find forever homes. Please follow, like and share to help us spread the word!

Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control is an all volunteer group of people that strive to better the lives of the animals being housed temporarily at the Petersburg Animal Care and Control (PACC) municipal, city run shelter. There are thousands of animals in the state of Virginia that are homeless for a multitude of reasons. We have simple goals.

1. Assisting the animals in the

care of PACC find their forever families by informing the public and rescue groups about the animals. We do this by publicizing the animals with photos and giving as much information as we can about each animal's temperament. Again, we are volunteers and not professionals. We can not guarantee any assessments made by our volunteers based on limited interactions in an environment that may be uncomfortable and unfamiliar to the animal. We will not be responsible for assessing the age, health or temperament of animals.
2. Enriching the lives of the animals through human contact. This may include walks, play time or simply sitting with each animal.
3. Educating the public about the needs of companion animals in order to live side by side with their owners in the community safely and happily

We are not employed by the city of Petersburg or by PACC. We can not make any decisions about the availability of any animals. We can not set up appointments nor can we decide the outcome of any application for adoption. We can not pick up stray animals and do not know if a lost pet is at the shelter. We can not enforce any laws set forth by the city of Petersburg or the state of Virginia regarding companion animals. We will do our best to keep this page updated with animals available for adoption but we are not at the shelter on a daily bases and may not know when new animals come into PACC or when animals have been adopted and have left the shelter. Thank you for visiting this page and considering adoption!

Sometimes the sweetest dogs end up in the shelter through no fault of their own.

Carti is one of those dogs.

This beautiful 2-year-old, 50-pound girl lost her home simply because her owner could no longer keep her where he was living. Now she’s hoping someone will give her the forever family she deserves. 🏡

When you first meet Carti, she can be a little shy. New places and new people are a lot to take in. But give her just a few minutes, and you’ll see her gentle personality begin to shine. 🥹

She loves exploring the world around her, taking in every new sight and smell, but she’s just as happy leaning against you for pets or curling up beside you once she feels safe. ❤️

Carti has a sturdy, athletic build and would love an active family who will include her in their adventures, but she also has a wonderfully affectionate side that makes quiet evenings together just as special.

She’s smart, eager to learn, and would thrive with a little structure, consistency, and lots of love.

⛈️ The thunder doesn’t just sound different to Sherbet.

It feels different.

Tonight, while many of us are curled up safely inside listening to the rain, Sherbet is remembering a very different life. 🥺

For much of his first two years, Sherbet lived on the end of a chain. There was no warm couch. No reassuring voice telling him everything would be okay. No one to close the windows, turn on the TV, or wrap him in a blanket when the sky turned dark.

Just thunder.
⚡ Lightning.
🌧️ Rain.
And nowhere to go.

Even now, storms make him afraid.

The heartbreaking part is that Sherbet doesn’t let his past define how he loves people. ❤️ Despite everything, he greets us with a wagging tail, eager to play, eager to learn, eager to trust. He’s working hard on his training, loves to stretch his legs after years of confinement, and once he’s gotten his zoomies out, he melts into affection like he’s been waiting his whole life to belong to someone.

Sherbet doesn’t need someone to save him.

He just needs someone to show him that storms don’t have to be scary anymore.

🏡 Someone whose home becomes his safe place.

🤎 Someone who will remind him that when the thunder rolls, he never has to face it alone again.

Sherbet is just 2 years old, neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, and ready to trade the uncertainty of shelter life for the security of a family who will love him forever. 🐾

If your heart has room for a dog who has already survived so much and still chooses love every single day, Sherbet is waiting.

📧 Email [email protected] to learn more about giving this sweet boy the forever home he’s always deserved.

Looking for a running buddy, hiking partner, and best friend all in one? Meet Mano. 🐾

This 6-month-old Pit Bull/Shepherd mix is everything you would expect from a puppy: playful, energetic, curious, and always ready for fun. Mano loves other dogs and is happiest when he has a friend to play with, whether that is a canine companion or an active human.

Like any young pup, Mano is still learning the ropes. He is working on his manners and house training, so he is looking for a family that is ready to help him become the best dog he can be. With consistency, training, and plenty of exercise, this smart boy is going to make an amazing companion.

Mano would thrive with an active owner who enjoys getting out and about and wants a dog to share adventures with. Whether it is walks, hikes, training sessions, or playtime in the yard, Mano is ready to be your sidekick.

Puppies like Mano do not stay available for long. If you are ready for a fun-loving, dog-friendly companion, now is the time to meet him!

If you have been looking for a dog that checks all the boxes, we would like to introduce you to Neveah. ❤️

At around 1.5 to 2 years old, Neveah is the perfect mix of young, smart, friendly, and ready for her fresh start. She appears to be a Border Collie and herding breed mix, with the adorable speckled markings to prove it. But unlike some herding dogs, Neveah comes with all the brains and much less of the intensity.

This sweet girl loves people and has never met a stranger. She is affectionate, social, and always happy to be part of whatever is going on. Whether she is joining you for a walk, hanging out in the yard, or simply soaking up attention, Neveah is happiest when she is with her people.

She is eager to learn, enjoys engaging with those around her, and has all the makings of an incredible companion. With a little guidance and consistency, we think Neveah will thrive in just about any home looking for a loyal best friend.

Dogs like Neveah do not come around often. She has the personality, the looks, and the heart to make someone very lucky.

Duncan is not doing well in the shelter. 💔

This petite little guy was abandoned by his owner and is struggling with the noise, chaos, and constant activity that come with shelter life. While other dogs may bark and bounce around, Duncan spends his days trying to make himself small and wishing for a place where he can finally feel safe.

At around 2 years old, Duncan should be enjoying life, but right now he is overwhelmed and unsure. Despite that, we continue to see glimpses of the sweet dog hiding beneath the stress. With patience and kindness, he starts to let his guard down and show the loving companion he wants to be.

We have not completed a full dog test yet, but Duncan has shown signs that he may do well with other dogs. We are still getting to know him and learning more every day.

What Duncan needs most is a chance. A quiet home. A soft bed. Someone willing to give him the time to decompress and remember what it feels like to belong.

The shelter is not where this little guy is meant to spend his days. Please help us find Duncan the fresh start he deserves.

She has all the makings of an incredible companion and is ready to leave her past behind for a future filled with soft beds, belly rubs, and a family of her own.

🚨 FOSTER NEEDED FOR RICA BY JUNE 24 🚨

We are urgently searching for a foster home for Rica before June 24, when she is scheduled to receive her heartworm treatment injections.

After everything this sweet girl has been through, Rica was finally on track to receive her heartworm treatment injections on June 24 and 25 and begin her journey toward a healthier future. Unfortunately, she was recently returned to the shelter after what turned out to be the wrong match. Rica is once again back in a kennel environment, and she is struggling.

The shelter is proving far too stressful for her. Rica thrives when she has consistency, routine, and people to love. Instead, she has found herself back in a noisy, unfamiliar environment at one of the most important points in her recovery.

We desperately need a foster home where Rica can safely recover after her heartworm treatment injections and continue on the path to good health. All medical care and treatment will be provided. What Rica needs is a calm place to rest, heal, and finally catch a break.

Rica is 7 years old, house trained, crate trained, loves people, and adores children. She needs a home where she can be the only dog, and a securely fenced yard is required.

Please help us give Rica the chance she deserves. If you can foster, or know someone who can, contact us immediately. Even sharing this post could help Rica find the safe place she needs before her treatment date.

She has waited so long for things to get better. Let’s not let her recover from heartworm treatment in a shelter kennel.

Update: Pending adoption meet

Those eyes. 🖤

Coal is a 6-month-old puppy with a story that is still being written. When he arrived, he was very underweight and a little unsure of the world around him. Since then, he has been gaining weight, building confidence, and showing us what a special little dog he truly is.

At around 20 pounds, Coal is a petite guy with a gentle soul. He can be a bit shy when meeting new people, but once you earn his trust, he becomes your biggest fan. The puppy who hangs back at first quickly transforms into a loyal best friend who wants nothing more than to be close to his favorite people.

Coal is looking for a patient adopter who understands that confidence takes time to build. The reward? Watching this sweet boy continue to blossom and knowing you helped him discover that the world is not such a scary place after all.

If you are looking for a loyal companion and have room in your heart for an underdog, Coal is ready to meet you. 🖤

Bellamy has come so far, and now all she needs is a family to call her own. ❤️

When Bellamy arrived as a stray, she was in rough shape and badly underweight. Despite everything she had been through, she never stopped being sweet, trusting, and eager for affection. Today, she is at a healthy weight, spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and ready to start the next chapter of her life.

Bellamy is the definition of a people dog. She loves being close to her humans, soaking up attention, and snuggling whenever she gets the chance. She will gently nudge your hand for pets and happily curl up beside you just to be near. She is also dog friendly and enjoys spending time with other dogs.

Because she bonds so deeply with her people, Bellamy would do best in a home where someone is around often. She is not a good fit for apartment living and is looking for a family that can give her the companionship and stability she craves.

After everything she has overcome, Bellamy deserves a home where she never has to wonder if she is safe, loved, or wanted again. If you are looking for a loyal companion who will adore you with her whole heart, Bellamy is waiting to meet you.

Snow is ready to find her person. ❄️

This petite 10-month-old Husky is full of personality, energy, and potential. She is playful, social, and loves spending time with other dogs. Whether she is romping around with canine friends or exploring the world around her, Snow approaches life with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Like many young Huskies, Snow is still learning the ropes. She can be very mouthy and will need an adopter who is committed to training, consistency, and helping her mature into the amazing dog we know she can be. The effort you put into Snow now will be rewarded with a loyal companion for years to come.

Snow is looking for a home without children or cats. She would thrive with an active adopter who understands that Huskies are intelligent, energetic dogs that need both physical exercise and mental enrichment.

This sweet girl has her whole future ahead of her. All she needs is someone willing to give her the guidance, patience, and love she deserves. Could that be you?
