Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control

Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control Regular ol' peeps volunteering time & aiming to better the lives of the animals that call PACC home. We have simple goals.

1.

Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control is an all volunteer group of people that strive to better the lives of the animals being housed temporarily at the Petersburg Animal Care and Control (PACC) municipal, city run shelter. There are thousands of animals in the state of Virginia that are homeless for a multitude of reasons. Assisting the animals in the care of PACC find their f

orever families by informing the public and rescue groups about the animals. We do this by publicizing the animals with photos and giving as much information as we can about each animal's temperament. Again, we are volunteers and not professionals. We can not guarantee any assessments made by our volunteers based on limited interactions in an environment that may be uncomfortable and unfamiliar to the animal. We will not be responsible for assessing the age, health or temperament of animals.
2. Enriching the lives of the animals through human contact. This may include walks, play time or simply sitting with each animal.
3. Educating the public about the needs of companion animals in order to live side by side with their owners in the community safely and happily

We are not employed by the city of Petersburg or by PACC. We can not make any decisions about the availability of any animals. We can not set up appointments nor can we decide the outcome of any application for adoption. We can not pick up stray animals and do not know if a lost pet is at the shelter. We can not enforce any laws set forth by the city of Petersburg or the state of Virginia regarding companion animals. We will do our best to keep this page updated with animals available for adoption but we are not at the shelter on a daily bases and may not know when new animals come into PACC or when animals have been adopted and have left the shelter. Thank you for visiting this page and considering adoption!

Foster Friday Feature: Reintroducing Joy — now Nellie!
This sweet girl has a new name, a safe place to land, and she’s truly thriving in her foster home ✨

At just 8–10 months old and around 24 lbs, Nellie is a gentle, loving companion who wants nothing more than to be close to her people. She’s the definition of a snuggle buddy — happy to curl up beside you and follow you from room to room just to feel included 🤍

Nellie is still building her confidence with new things. Wood floors were very spooky at first, but she’s getting braver each day. She’s learning that her crate can be a safe space, and right now she LOVES her cozy “comfort corral,” a gated area around her crate where she feels secure and relaxed.

Most of the time, she’s calm and soft-tempered… but when the zoomies strike, she lets loose in the sweetest way 🐾 She loves people of all ages, including kids, but would do best with little ones who move gently and understand that she can startle easily.

With other dogs, Nellie does best with slow introductions. She’s curious and trying to learn how to play politely, and once she’s comfortable, she really leans on confident dog friends to show her the ropes. A resident dog could be a huge confidence booster for her.

She’s fully housebroken, adores tiny squeaky toys, and will proudly carry them on walks like the delicate little queen she is 👑

If you’re patient, gentle, and ready to help a sweet, resilient girl continue growing her confidence, Nellie will reward you with endless loyalty, cuddles, and joy.

Meet Piper — Your New Favorite Songbird
This gorgeous 1.5–2 year old, 28 lb chocolate tri-color Beagle is as pretty as they come… and she knows it.

Piper is sweet, playful, and fully house trained and crate trained — but don’t let her good manners fool you. This girl is needy in the most Beagle way. If you’re not giving her attention, she’ll let you know with a dramatic howl that could win awards. She loves people, loves affection, and wants to be right in the middle of whatever you’re doing.

She’s leash trained, curious, and always ready for an adventure… as long as her person is close by. Piper would thrive with someone who enjoys a velcro dog and finds her expressive, talkative nature charming.

We are completely full right now, and pups like Piper need adopters and fosters immediately. If Piper isn’t your match, we have many more wonderful dogs waiting.

🐾 Foster Dog Friday Feature: KEY! 🐾

Meet Key — the 4-month-old pup with the biggest ears and an even bigger personality! This Pit Bull/German Shepherd mix is about 25 lbs of pure charm, curiosity, and wiggle-butt energy.

Key is playful, bouncy, and full of life — the kind of puppy who loves to explore, learn, and make new friends. He does wonderfully with other dogs, adores people, and already has great manners for his age: he’s crate trained, house trained, and knows “sit.” Not bad for a baby!

He came to us as an owner surrender, and it’s clear he was loved — now he’s ready for his true forever. Key would thrive in a home with structure, affection, and maybe even a dog buddy to help show him the ropes.

If you’re looking for a fun, affectionate, smart little shadow who will grow into an incredible companion… Key might just be your missing piece.

🌟 Meet Pinky — Our Nearly Year-Long Resident Hoping for a Home 🌟

Pinky has been at the shelter for almost a full year now — making her our second longest resident. We truly can’t believe she’s still waiting.

This 4-year-old, 70 lb lab mix is a gentle, soft-hearted girl who just needs a moment to warm up. New people (especially men) can feel a little overwhelming at first… but offer her a treat and you’ll see her sweet side come forward. Once she trusts you, she becomes a loving, loyal companion.

Pinky gains a lot of confidence from other dogs and has done wonderfully meeting a variety of them. She rides beautifully in the car and absolutely enjoys quiet outings to the park — where her tail finally starts to wag and she gets to forget shelter stress for a little while.

And speaking of the shelter…
We are out of space, and difficult decisions have to be made. Pinky is trying so hard to stay hopeful, but a year is a long time to wait — especially for a dog who just wants to feel safe, understood, and home.

💛 Pinky is hoping for a family of her own this holiday season.
A calm home, a patient human, a soft bed, and maybe a confident dog friend — that’s all she needs to thrive.

If you think you could be her person, please email [email protected] with “Pinky” in the subject line.

She’s ready to leave the shelter behind.
She’s ready for love.
She’s ready for you.

💔 Tonka Needs a Home — Before Time Runs Out 💔

Tonka is back on the market through no fault of his own. His adopters adored him — they said he was a wonderful house guest — but ultimately realized they just weren’t ready for a new dog. Now Tonka is back at the shelter, confused and heartbroken, and it’s hitting him hard.

He’s about 4 years old, 60 pounds, and every bit the gentle soul his blocky head and big blue-and-white coat can’t hide. Tonka loves people, snuggles, and a good treat — but most of all, he just wants to belong. He thrived in a home environment, especially with a crate to call his safe space.

Here at the shelter, he’s struggling. The noise, the stress, the endless waiting — it’s wearing him down. And with kennels full and tough decisions looming, we need someone to see the incredible dog Tonka is and give him the chance he deserves.

Tonka is calm, affectionate, and full of quiet love. He’s not asking for much — just a place to rest his head and a person to share his heart with.

📩 If you can give Tonka the home he’s dreaming of, please email [email protected] today.
Every adoption right now truly saves a life — and Tonka’s could be next.

✨ Two for Tuesday: Silver & Starling ✨

After 7 long months at the shelter, this stunning husky duo is still waiting for their forever home — together. 💔

Silver and Starling came into our care back in April, likely a mother-daughter pair, and have been inseparable ever since. In their kennel, they can always be found curled up together, gently grooming one another and finding comfort in each other’s presence.

They’ve spent much of their lives outdoors, and while the transition to indoor living has been new for them, they’re making incredible progress each day. Silver leads with calm confidence and her piercing blue eyes, while Starling—shy but full of heart—takes cues from her braver companion.

🐾 About Silver
The older and steadier of the two, Silver explores new places with curiosity and quiet assurance. She’s affectionate, patient, and the kind of dog who brings calm wherever she goes.

🐾 About Starling
Starling’s deep brown eyes reveal her gentle, sensitive soul. She’s shy at first, but with patience and love, she blossoms into the most loyal, loving companion.

These two are gentle, bonded, and full of love to give—they simply need a patient home to call their own.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting, this is your sign. Giving Silver and Starling their forever home means giving two deserving souls the chance to finally rest easy, side by side.

🐾 Justin – 9 Months of Waiting 🐾

This is Justin, and he has spent over 9 months growing up in the shelter. 💔

When he first arrived, he was absolutely terrified. The world hadn’t been kind to him, and he didn’t know if people were safe. But underneath all that fear is a gentle, goofy, 50 lb, 1.5-year-old pup who just wants to love and be loved.

Once Justin feels safe, his real personality comes out:
🟢 rolls in the grass like a happy little hippo
🟢 tosses his toys around
🟢 leans in for affection from “his” people
🟢 dog friendly with slow, appropriate introductions

The shelter is still overwhelming for him, and it’s no place for a sensitive young dog to spend this long. Justin needs a patient, understanding home that will give him time to settle, move at his pace, and keep building his confidence.

In return, you’ll get a loyal, tender-hearted companion who will never forget that you were the one who gave him a chance.

Email [email protected] with “Justin” in the subject line.

If you can’t adopt, please share his story. After 9 long months, it’s time for Justin to finally go home. 🧡

🐶 Meet Bella! 🐶

This adorable 5–6 month old beagle mix is the total package — playful, affectionate, and oh-so-smart! 💛

Bella loves to play hard and snuggle harder. She’s dog-friendly, crate trained, and housebroken — the perfect mix of puppy energy and sweetness. Whether she’s zooming around the yard or curled up beside you for a nap, Bella’s happiest just being part of the action (and your heart 💕).

She’s ready to find her forever family who’ll love her just as much as she’ll love them!

🐾 Foster Dog Friday: Meet Lillie! 🐾

Lillie is a young lab mix with a heart as big as her energy level — and she’s ready to find her person!

This playful girl lives for dog friends and would thrive in a home with another active pup or one that can include her in plenty of adventures. She’s curious about cats (a little nosy but not pushy), loves people, and is always up for fun.

Lillie is all puppy — smart, affectionate, and eager to learn — and she’s looking for someone who can give her the structure and consistency to blossom into the amazing companion she’s meant to be.
