⚠️ Residents and commuters: We have streets updates! ⚠️

First, as we wrap up the new curbing along 5th Street, we are now in the milling and paving phase. This part of the project will go quickly. Please plan to avoid 5th Street from the Al Wheeler Activity Center to Nebraska Street this weekend. This is the final countdown and we are so excited!

Second, we will be repairing the "dip" in Park Avenue by the PSC Complex driveway. This dip is caused by a culvert below the street that needs replaced. We anticipate this work to begin early next week and continue through the week, weather dependent. Drivers will be able to access the PSC Complex parking lot from Highway 67, but for anything north of that an alternate route will need to be taken.

The City of Peru, including City Hall, will be closed tomorrow, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. We will be open as usual on Friday.

Heads-up for residents:

First, if you see the folks in the picture below, slow down and give them a friendly wave! Lil Will and his friends are trimming back branches around town. You may see limbs stacked up around town - our staff will be coming through on Monday morning to haul them off.

Second, 5th street is open at the Washington Street intersection again! Curbing and inlets are progressing, and the street is now closed between Washington and Hoyt (though at this time both of those intersections are open). Just keep in mind that this is an ongoing project and streets will continue to be opened and closed as work progresses.

We appreciate your understanding as these projects are underway. As ever, we are happy to answer questions at City Hall.

I am seeing some questions about trees at Neal Park being removed. The two trees were large cottonwood trees that were dead or dying. We consulted with an arborist who shared that while one might have looked alive, the heartwood (which is the skeleton of the tree) was dead. Dead trees can cause a lot of damage and are not safe.

This decision was brought in front of council and approved in the April meeting. It was listed in the council agenda.

We are committed to transparency, and we also take decisions about the safety of park enjoyers seriously.

Seniors and those with mobility challenges, join us for a golf cart tour of the Steamboat Trace. Enjoy beautiful scenery, Sherman drawings, geology, and history during Spring along the Steamboat Trace.

Today is the day - Feeding 44 is in town!

REMINDER: Tomorrow, June 6th, we're hosting Feeding 44 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

We will have signs and posters placed to help direct vehicle traffic for this special community outreach program. Peru State College cares for our neighbors in Southeast Nebraska. You will see our students, faculty, and staff volunteering their time for our monthly mobile food distribution.

🟠During "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" AQI (orange category) conditions, members of sensitive groups may experience health effects.

Please note that starting Monday, June 2, the intersection of 5th and Washington will be closed as the curbs and inlets are replaced. Please avoid that intersection and plan for alternate routes. We will update again when it is back open. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve our streets and drainage! Contact city hall with any questions. Please share with friends and neighbors.

💦 Thanks to our maintenance crew, the City of Auburn and the Board of Public Works for getting non-potable water to Peru residents! Come on down and fill your buckets (maybe this was all we needed to finally get some rain! 🌧️)
