We want to take a moment to address a very difficult and heartbreaking incident that occurred at our facility last Friday resulting in the death of a dog in our care. After speaking with both families involved in the matter first and completing our investigation, we wanted to notify our clients of the incident.
When our pack was re-entering the building after their early morning potty break, our staff members who were supervising the pack were in the process of separating dogs into different play groups through a gate. During this time, one dog unexpectedly grabbed a 5.5 lb dog that was standing approximately 8 feet from the staff at the gate and 10 feet from the other staff member in that play area. The action was extremely swift and silent, as confirmed by our security footage and by staff. The staff did not witness the bite itself, but a quick motion drew staff's attention, prompting staff to immediately go check on the other dog who was then seen lying down in the pack. Upon assessing the situation, staff immediately grabbed the dog and rushed her to the nearest vet hospital. Tragically, the dog passed away on the way to the hospital in the arms of staff.
The family was notified immediately and were provided with security footage of the incident. Since Friday, our leadership team has been conducting a thorough internal investigation—reviewing video footage, speaking with staff, and consulting with others in the industry about protocols and next steps. While there was no loud commotion, no aggressive warning signs, and no prolonged fight, we believe we have identified—with a high degree of certainty—the dog responsible for the incident. Although we had no prior incidents with this dog, and they had only been a client of ours for less than a month, this dog will not be allowed to return to our facility.
We’ve also implemented an immediate policy change: small and fragile dogs will no longer participate in pack play due to the increased vulnerability of their size. This decision reflects our ongoing commitment to doing everything possible to protect the safety of every dog in our care. Even with careful grouping play style and energy level, the risk for our most delicate guests can’t be completely eliminated—so this change is necessary.
Our team, and the families involved, have been deeply shaken by this loss. We care for these dogs as if they’re our own, and for the past 12 years, our mission has always been to provide a fun, safe, and enriching environment.
While pack play is a joyful, healthy, and enriching experience for most dogs, it’s important to remember that any time dogs play together—at any facility—there is a small but real risk of injury or illness. Friday’s incident was a rare and tragic reminder of that. We are holding the families affected close in our hearts and thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
Out of respect, we wanted to make sure both families involved were contacted and given time to process the details of our investigation prior to a public statement being made. We appreciate your understanding, support, and trust as we continue to care for your pets with the love and diligence they deserve.
