Ok, the doors are in! There were some choice words, tense moments and we may or may not have hung one door four times before it was right. I apologize to the wonderful folks at Ace Hardware for what they might have heard screamed over the phone.
Here are a few observations and my Valentine's Day advice to married couples.
1. It is possible to frame, level and hang doors while not speaking to each other. In fact, the ability to do it without speaking says a lot about how well you read each other.
2. Sometimes it's not about you. Sometimes a 6000 lumens light and a new 24" level with extra big easy to see bubbles will solve the problem.
3.Appreciate the person who can hold the door while you put in the hinge pins. Even if they yell at you the entire time for not doing it fast enough. Sometimes, it's just because the door is heavy, not because you aren't fast enough.
4. Find someone who likes all of the dumb and crazy things that you do, make them homemade meatballs and sauce and hold on to them forever.

I am absolutely not a "junker". I am a saver of all things too important to throw away ๐Ÿ˜‰. Today's adventure with Phil was rescuing two of these magnificent solid wood doors from the old bowling alley. The new owners of the property were kind enough to let us repurpose these pieces of my childhood before they disappeared forever.
Working only by the light of a cell phone and a few tools in the complete darkness, we were able to carefully extract the perfect doors for our future restaurant space.
They don't have quite the cool factor that the two doors from the old Masonic building have, but they will absolutely save us at least 600 bucks and will always bring me great memories every time I see them.

The very last project is done on the boot repair store. The remaining fluorescent lights are gone and the vintage fluorescent lights have been converted to LED. It's beautiful and open and ready to illuminate a great new business! Just waiting on the walk through with the City to make sure all is in order.
Now to move on to building number 2 where the restaurant will go. Maybe a video if I can manage it!

So the town is in the midst of a water crisis with everyone trying to do their part to get through this together. Except of course for the few that are unhappy that the City didn't prevent the unforeseeable and can't believe their water is probably now going to kill everyone.
The first photo is totally screenshoted from the "we are all going to die " post that is now deleted. The second photo is my solution, made in firm solidarity with the "don't drink the water" crowd. Instead, choose a nice Cab/Sab or maybe a Shiraz or Chianti. This also has the added benefit of making Facebook more tolerable.
Do your part Perry and conserve water by drinking wine! And while you are at it, raise a glass to the thankless job of keeping this city ticking and those poor employees out there in terrible weather for our benefit. Extra points if it's a Ducks Unlimited glass. Feel free to post your toasts here and let these folks know we appreciate them!
I personally am raising my glass to the majority of people in our wonderful town who know we all get through together and the folks who run this town who bear the brunt of the critics.
Cheers!

This is a post about economic impact and small steps that can make a real difference. Tonight we are at the 1893 Axe House playing co****le. In this photo you see *one* person from Perry. Every one else is from out of town. Garber, Stillwater, Ponca and further etc. One group ate at Mariachi, one brought in food from Sonic and several others got gas and ate at other places. It is a small thing that makes a bigger difference in our tax base.
You have to be a leader. You have to make an impact on your own. You have to do it on your own because no one will do it for you. But ultimately you need the support of your town and locals.
Bring in tax dollars, bring in fun! Look at the parking on the west side of the Square tonight. Where you at Perry? Why do we have so many folks from out of town and Perry doesn't show up? Sometimes it's disheartening but I swear I will beat this drum until I die.

Sometimes I feel like posts like this get read, shared and maybe sorta appreciated, but not really *appreciated*. I can't emphasize enough how important our Main Street Perry program has been for not only what we have been trying to accomplish in town as "The Globe", but to our community as a whole.
Our Main Street Perry organization is actual people. There are faces and personalities behind what we all think of as just an organization. They work hard, they are mostly volunteers but very seldom get the credit they deserve for just giving a darn about our community and they all love this town.
Thank them, recognize the important impact they are making, the real quality of life changes they are making in our town and most of all, contribute. If you don't have money to give, give your time and volunteer. Share your own gifts!
I hear so often about how great things used to be in Perry when we were all growing up. I would say that things have never been so good as they are now. If you don't agree, what can *you* do to help create a better place for us all?
I want to thank Main Street, the Chamber, the City of Perry, and all those individuals and just dreamers out there who are contributing. We see you and appreciate you! Let's do this together.

Quick holiday catch up. The bathroom is (was) the largest major project remaining in the first building. I don't want to refer to it as the antique store anymore. So I'll call it the leather shop. ๐Ÿ˜Š. I've made huge progress on this project have full confidence it will be done in time. Paint, (good bye to the last of.the.pink!), a toilet and vanity and it's done. Phil has done the plumbing repairs so all is good there.
Skip ahead to an amazing Christmas present from Phil (John Fullbright shadow box) and then back to a most amazing rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ photo out the front door of the leather shop
OK, so with rainbows comes rain.
Slight setback is a really leaky roof. Had hoped to avoid a complete repair and just do some patching but pretty sure we are past that. This could be a deadline killer ๐Ÿ˜’.
That's where we are at the moment. We want to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a wonderful new year!

The clock is ticking. We are two weeks away from our deadline and getting our new renter in place for a great new business in town. We have been busy tying up all the loose ends and getting the bathroom finished. The last of the pink is in there ๐Ÿ˜’. Getting switch plate covers on, cleaning the floors and rehanging the doors etc. A bit of a bump today with some water leaks and getting them chased down and fixed. It's always bad when the hammer drill comes out! However, my dear husband pushed through a temporary setback and we are lined out to finish strong. He gets chicken parmesan tonight for supper. It's his favorite
We are trying to plan for Christmas with the family and still meet our deadlines. My mother is unhappy about my church attendance but I still love me some Jesus and feel so blessed. I swear I'm not going to hell.
Finally, the LED light bulbs are scheduled to come in this week and the beautiful old vintage fixtures will be converted so the "new" fluorescent fixtures can be removed.
I am so excited for phase 1 to be finished. Materials are already on order for diving back into the restaurant building and getting it done.
So close!
The most important thing is a building saved and a new business and family in downtown Perry. The finish line is in sight!

I feel like a lot of rehabbing these old buildings is basically problem solving. You know the old saying about "cheap, fast, and easy...pick two". Well, I might have found a way to get all three!
Problem to be solved: the ceiling in the back of the old antique store is those fiber board tongue in groove panels. Some are damaged, some are missing and they are *expensive* to replace. They aren't even all the same size. Paint won't cover the water damage either, I tried!
Solution: 1. Do nothing. I feel this isn't an option since some are missing. We are on a deadline but I sincerely just can't leave the ugly.
2. Replace the tiles in the damaged areas. These outdated tiles are hard to find and expensive. It will take a lot of cut and paste to get them to fit and I will have to paint the entire thing when done so the old tiles match the new. Not cheap!
3. Put up drywall. So... this would require removal of all of the tiles, putting up drywall and taping and painting. Not easy, not cheap and not fast.
4. Find something to cover the existing ceiling that is light, cheap and thin.
So you all may know that I replicated ceiling tiles in the Axe House with thermoformed ยน plastic. I don't have to match anything existing in this building so I wanted to find something ready made that would serve the same purpose. I happened to find ceiling tiles that are glue up, light, and $0.80 ish a square foot! They are made of Styrofoam of all things.
I was sincerely skeptical but I am pretty happy with how they look and cover a multitude of sins!

I feel like we work on the buildings a lot but don't necessarily have Facebook worthy posts and pictures to share all the time. So it makes updates kind of difficult because I don't want them to be boring. But updates can be important even if they aren't sexy. So here goes.
Phil and I have been in intense "negotiations" over the color of the ceiling and walls in the old antique store and have agreed at least on the ceiling color. We spent the entire weekend prepping for ceiling paint on Tuesday which includes very boring things like scraping paint and caulking.
One important issue has been salvaging the antique florescent lighting fixtures and getting rid of the more modern florescent fixtures. The problem at hand is making sure the old fixtures will be bright enough to light the space. Enough "oomph" if you will. Ray Malget to the rescue! He has been assuring us that converting the old fixtures to LED is not only easy but will light up the entire space.
Ray came down today and rewired a fixture to LED in literally minutes and the difference was incredible! The LED bulbs will be ordered tomorrow!
No matter how this building renovation thing turns out for us, I will never forget and will be forever grateful to the like minded and incredibly knowledgeable people who have stepped up to lend their talents, advice or help to the cause.
We get two incredible doors from Carol Schwartz Steichen tomorrow. Alicia Seabolt and her help with finding paneling and Ray Malget and his help with the lighting are all just examples of folks who see the greater vision and are willing to help out.
These are the kinds of people who make the work all worth while. That and of course bringing sushi to Perry.
