We have all heard how awful chocolate is for dogs and cats. Truth be told, it is dark chocolate, especially baker’s chocolate, that is particularly harmful. Most dogs can actually ingest 1 mg of milk chocolate per pound of body weight without much more than some G.I. upset. That in no way means that you should allow your pets to have chocolate! Many times the wrappers cause more issues than the chocolate itself, for example, the foil wrappers on many chocolate Easter eggs and other candies. Not only can foil get stuck, it is sharp and can cause perforation in the intestines. So keep those Easter baskets far back on kitchen counters, or put them up high where your pets cannot get into them. If they do accidentally ingest any, contact your vet for a course of action.
