🐾 K9-Kent’s 4th of July Safety Tips for Dog Owners 🐾

The 4th of July is a time for celebration, but fireworks, loud noises, and festive gatherings can be stressful for our furry friends.
Here’s how to keep your dog safe and calm this Independence Day:

1️⃣ Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home with your dog’s favorite bed, toys, and blankets. Play soft music or use a white noise machine to drown out fireworks.

2️⃣ Avoid Fireworks Displays: Loud bangs and bright flashes can cause anxiety or panic. Keep your dog indoors, preferably in a room away from windows, during peak firework times.

3️⃣ Check ID Tags & Microchips: Ensure your dog’s collar has up-to-date tags, and their microchip info is current. Escapes are common during 4th of July chaos—be prepared!

4️⃣ Exercise Early: Take your dog for a long walk or play session earlier in the day to help them burn off energy and stay relaxed during evening festivities.

5️⃣ Keep Hazards Out of Reach: Barbecue scraps, glow sticks, and alcohol can be toxic to dogs. Keep party food and decorations away from curious noses.

🐾 Heidi’s Leash Walking Adventures! 🐶✨

Our sweet Service Dog in Training, Heidi, is making PAW-some progress with her leash walking! 🐕💪

It’s not perfect yet, but we’re working on it with lots of love, patience, and treats! 🦴😊
Training takes time and tons of repetitions, but we’re so proud of how far our girl has come!

🌟 Oh, and guess what?! Heidi turns ONE next month! 🎉🎂 Can you believe it?!

Want to know how we’re teaching Heidi to walk on a loose leash? Here’s our step-by-step guide to help your pup strut their stuff without pulling: 🚶‍♀️🐾
1️⃣ Start with the Right Gear 🦮
Use a comfy harness or collar and a standard leash (no retractable ones!). 🛠️
2️⃣ Set Up for Success 🌳
Begin in a low-distraction area (like your backyard). Fewer squirrels = more focus! 🐿️🙈
3️⃣ Reward the Right Position 🍖
Hold treats by your side where you want Heidi to walk. When she stays close without pulling, say “Yes!” and give a treat! 😋 Positive vibes only!
4️⃣ Stop When They Pull ✋
If Heidi tugs, we stop walking. No forward movement until the leash is loose. It teaches her pulling doesn’t get her anywhere! 🚫
5️⃣ Change Directions 🔄
Randomly turn around or switch directions. This keeps Heidi guessing and focused on us, not that tempting mailbox! 📬😉
6️⃣ Practice, Practice, Practice! 🔁
Short, frequent sessions (5-10 minutes) work best. Repetition is key to building that muscle memory! 💪🐾
7️⃣ Gradually Add Distractions 🌍
Once Heidi’s a pro at home, we move to quiet streets, then busier areas. Slow and steady wins the race! 🏁
8️⃣ Stay Patient & Positive 😊
Every pup learns at their own pace. Celebrate small wins, and keep it fun! Heidi loves the praise (and treats)! 🥰🦴

🐶Pet owners, especially dog owners, take note: asphalt and concrete can reach 135°F+, burning paws in seconds—stick to grass or walk early morning/evening.
🚗Never leave pets in cars; heat can be deadly in minutes!

At K9-Kent, we transport all dogs in an air-conditioned, insulated trailer with a generator, temperature-controlled and monitored to ensure every dog’s safety and comfort. 🐶💦

🐾🎉 Big updates on Heidi’s journey to becoming a Service Dog! 🐶✨ We started her on walking next to an electric shopping cart 🛒💪 and she’s doing AMAZING! 🌟 Her implied sit is spot on ✔️ and her stays are SO solid 🛑🙌.

Next steps? Earning her AKC CGC, CGCA, CGCU certifications 🏅🎓 and mastering her special tasks 🦮🧩. We’re getting close, but it’s all part of the process! 🚶‍♀️💖
