With Nate heading a little west, we should get some bad weather but not a full hurricane. Sb Reefs should be open regular hours today. Still need to prepare. Here are some tips, feel free to add your own.

1. Have a battery powered air pump and fresh airstones. Make sure you have batteries. It's a good idea to test your pump ahead of time to see how long a pack of batteries last. Then buy enough batteries for 2 or 3 days.

2. Pick up a brute trash can or two, and fill with Rodi. For saltwater tanks this will allow you to do water changes if you're out of power for more than 3 days. Pick up a box of salt mix as well. For freshwater tanks you can fill the cans with tap water, just make sure you have a good dechlorinator available. Rubbermaid brute trash cans are the only ones I know of that are BPA free and safe for drinking water. Not a bad idea to have an extra one for the family. With folks fighting over bottled water at the grocery store, it's so easy to Simply fill one up from the tap and put the lid on it.

3. Don't feed your fish the day before a storm, they can go 2 or 3 days without food with no problems. No need to add more bioload to a tank that has no filter.

4. Freeze 2L or 20 oz soda bottles filled with water ahead of time. If your tank starts to get too hot when you have no power, you can pull a 20-ounce bottle and throw it in the sump or display tank. It will also help keep your freezer cold longer. It's a win-win. Most tanks can handle 80 to 82 degrees for a day or even 2. If the tank gets to 84 degrees, especially a saltwater tank with coral, it could be a disaster.

5. Oxygenation will be the biggest key to keeping your fish alive for a couple days without power. If you can't get a battery powered air pump, you can use a two bucket system to create flow. Have one bucket up high on a ladder with a siphon hose going into the tank. Then have another bucket on the floor with a siphon hose coming out of the tank. Start both siphons. When the bottom bucket is almost full swap it with the top bucket. Check your tank level every once in awhile to make sure the top bucket is not flowing faster than the bottom bucket. Even just taking a 2L picture and pulling out water and dumping it right back in a couple times an hour can make a huge difference on oxygen levels.

6. Keep the tank dark as possible. Tape construction paper, styrofoam or other materials to the front sides and back. You don't want to cover the top as you need oxygen interchange. If you have a plastic or glass canopy I would remove those during the power out. Unless you have guaranteed jumpers. A darker tank will have less active fish and less active fish will use less oxygen. One exception to this is if you have a heavily planted freshwater tank. At that point you need to get as much light in the tank as possible otherwise the plants will start respirating and fill the tank up with CO2.

7. If the power has been out for a couple days or more, be aware that any mechanical filter pads may have started to be broken down anaerobically producing methane and hydrogen sulfide. These gases are very toxic to fish so try to remove and clean the filter pads before the power comes back on. Do not let a canister or hang on the back filter start back up without first replacing all of the water in side with clean fresh water.

8. The stress of a power out, lower oxygen levels, and less filtering, can lead to fish not being able to fight off disease as well. Keep an eye out for any fish that don't look good and Medicaid as needed as soon as power is on. Some products that help with slime coat production would be a good additive the day before storm, for example stress coat.

9. Have ammonia test kits ready ahead of time. This will be how you determine when you will need to do a water change with the limited supply you have available.

10. Check with your local fish store, you may not have power however they may be just fine. They may have needed supplies, or even the ability to babysit fish.

11. From Scott W. Van Caster - A fully fueled vehicle, cheap inverter, and an extension cord can power a power head a long time
