🚨 EHV-1 Alert for Our Clients 🚨

We want to make you aware of a recent EHV-1 outbreak linked to events in Texas and Oklahoma (per the Texas Department of Agriculture & EDCC). Out of caution, we strongly recommend a 14-day voluntary quarantine for any horses that attended those events, were stabled nearby, or traveled through the area.

If your horse may have been exposed:
• Quarantine for 14 days
• Take temperatures twice daily (fever ≥ 101.5°F = concern)
• Watch for fever, nasal discharge, cough, lethargy, or neurologic signs (stumbling, weakness, loss of coordination)

If your horse develops a fever or clinical signs, please notify us immediately. Prompt attention will allow us to facilitate testing and proper identification of the causative agent.

Biosecurity tips:
• Keep exposed horses isolated
• Disinfect tack, buckets, trailers, and shared surfaces
• Don’t share equipment between horses
• Wash hands, change clothes/boots between exposed vs. healthy horses and work with exposed horses last

At this time, we encourage everyone to limit travel and horse-to-horse contact.

We will share updates from the Colorado State Veterinarian and surrounding state veterinarians as soon as they are available. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Stay safe & vigilant,
Elite Equine Veterinary Team

Attention clients & friends:

New USEF Microchip Rule Coming 12/1/2025

Starting with the 2026 show season, all horses competing at USEF licensed competitions -across all breeds and disciplines- will be required to have a registered microchip on file with USEF.

It is the responsibility of the participant to report the microchip number to USEF.

🐎For barns, owners, trainers, and competitors, now is the time to:
✔️ Call your vet and have your horse checked to see if it is already microchipped
✔️ Report it using the tool if not already on file
✔️ Plan ahead for compliance before the rule goes into effect
✔️ Add your horse’s microchip number to their 2026 coggins

USEF has published a suite of helpful tools to prepare:

What Is Equine Gastroscopy – and Why Does It Matter?

If you’ve ever wondered how vets diagnose gastric ulcers in horses, the answer is gastroscopy! This simple procedure lets us look inside your horse’s stomach using a thin, flexible camera (called a gastroscope). 🩺🔍

Gastroscopy is the only way to definitively diagnose if a horse has ulcers — and characterize how severe they are.

Ulcers are surprisingly common, especially in performance horses, and signs can be subtle, like:
⚠️ Changes in attitude or behavior⚠️ Poor appetite or picky eating⚠️ Girthiness or sensitivity⚠️ Weight loss or trouble maintaining condition⚠️ Decreased performance

Gastroscopy is safe, straightforward, and gives us immediate insight into your horse’s digestive health. If you've heard the term but weren't sure what it involved, now you know!

A healthy gut = a happier horse.
