Thursday Thoughts.
Every season we see the posts of "the great debate, to blanket or not to blanket" as the months get cooler....I've never understood this as it's really not up to us, it's up to our horses. Managerial situations, facilities n demographics can be limiting but so could breed, age, genetics.
While my herd may have descended from wilds many moons ago, I don't use this as the reason I do or don't do anything...what do they need and what's best for them is what drives me. Age, coat, metabolic conditions, tolerance and more are a few pieces of that puzzle.
Now the weather has started to warm up and as you can see, I have wrapped some of the ladies up in their bug-ritto outfits. Rarely do I see as much arguing over this type of dress up but couldn't the same arguments others use be valid? They're built for it they'll be fine, etc.
On the contrary. Their sense of touch is arguably the most sensitive and extreme sense they have. Ever been bit by one mosquito? How about the spring swarm? It can be maddening for a horse, so I help by providing them some comfort and relief. It has been the wettest spring on record and we are surrounded by swamp land, you can use your imagination on the Jumanji level skeeters we have right now 😭
A breakdown of our why in hopes it adds empathy to the next time you say "it's just a bug, relax..."
✅ Noel has a beautiful but fine coat with thin skin. She will run around trying to get away from the pests
✅ P has reacted to assorted biting things over the years, her coat can be variable with Cushing's so we keep her covered
✅ BB 😅 well that in itself should provide insight as to why.
I am mindful of the heat n will adjust practices accordingly just like with the cold...and really anything in between.
At the end of the day, it's my number one rule, For the horse...always.
