**Unpopular opinion** ~ It’s not a matter of “disrespect” - it’s lack of awareness. A horse is always aware of the leader’s space.

As humans, our first tendency is either to back away (which is usually part of what causes this issue in the first place) or push back against the halter or horse itself (which does nothing to help the horse be more aware of our space).

By using body language, we can actually make it clear to the horse where our space is and increase their awareness. The pushy behavior will stop when we change their minds.

“Body Language” is a vague term that isn’t always well-defined. Understanding the application of the 3 elements of Position, Life and Space will get you on the track to being able to communicate much more effectively with your Equine on the ground!

Nothing like starting a horse on cows. Even if they aren’t destined to be a ranch horse or work cows in competition, it’s such a great way to add fun and purpose to the communication.

Tonks is a Quarter Horse and shows good interest and Confidence right out the gate. Have you ridden a horse on cows for the first time?

One of the simplest Groundwork movements there is, yet I see many folks not understanding what it’s really made up of.

The next thing I see is people doing way too much of it. So, get it right and working but make sure you’re progressing.

There are detrimental effects to overdoing this kindergarten manoeuvre - frustrating Forward motion in your horse, mechanizing the conversation and causing the front end to get stickier.
